Dr. Lewis Turner III passed away at his home in Racine, on January 30, 2009. He was born in Kenosha on November 25, 1922, to Lewis Turner Jr. and Sigrid Larsen.

Dr. Turner enlisted in the Army where he was selected for Officer Cadet School. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant and served in the Philippines during WWII. After the war he married Jane Downing King from Wilmington North Carolina, graduated from Medical School at the University of Pittsburg and came home to Kenosha where he practiced family medicine until his retirement. Dr. Turner successfully raced Standard bred horses at Wisconsin county fairs and at parimutuel race tracks in Illinois, was a private pilot and an avid long distance runner.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Carroll and Carolyn Larsen; children, Lewis, Lacy and Ivy; and four grandchildren

Kay Kennedy Koehn

Kay (nee: Kennedy) Koehn, 74, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Friday, January 30, 2009.

She was born on October 4, 1934, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the daughter of Oscar B. and Edna (nee: Keyes) Kennedy. Kay attended schools in her hometown of LaFarge where she was a cheerleader for her four years at LaFarge High School, graduating in 1952. She went on to complete her degree from Vernon County Teachers College in Viroqua, Wisconsin, graduating in 1954. Kay went on to teach in the LaFarge area for three years, grades one through four, Barneveld Elementary School, grades five and six for three years, along with Sun Prairie School sixth grade for one year.

On June 3, 1961 Kay was united in marriage to Robert Koehn in Madison. She continued teaching with Monroe Elementary School grades five and six, and Powers Elementary School for three years in the Beloit Tuner School System. During this time she continued her education, completing her teaching degree from UW Platteville in 1965. She also did graduate work in reading from Cardinal Stritch College.

Kay relocated with her husband Bob to Racine and taught fifth and sixth grades at Stephen Bull, and spent her last 19 years at J.I. Case High School in the Reading Resource Center in conjunction as an advisor with the Pep Club. Kay retired in 1990 with more than 35 years in education.

Kay was a faithful and proud member of Franksville United Methodist Church, and Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC). Kay enjoyed her retirement and traveling, especially the trips to New York, New Jersey, Niagara Falls and New Orleans and found great enjoyment in spending 15 winters in Arizona.

Kay is survived by her husband, Robert; brother, Rodney D. Kennedy of Racine; and sisters-in-law, Pat Kennedy of LaCrosse, Bess Koehn, Verneal Korn, all of Rockford, IL; nieces, Susan (Rich) Torine of Racine, Vicky Moutsopoulos of LaCrosse, Debbie (Brenda Borkenhagen) Koehn of Schaumburg, IL, Sandra (Mark) Green of St. Charles, IL, Kathy Koehn and Denise (Tom) Freethy all of Rockford; nephews, Sean Kennedy of Anchorage, Alaska, Stuart Kennedy of Mesa, AZ, Steve Kennedy of Amery, WI, Brice (Theresa) Kennedy of Westcliff, CO., and Todd (Cody) Kennedy of Denver, CO.; exchange student, Andres (Monica) Navas and their children, Andres Jr. and Stephanie all of Paterson, NJ. She is further survived by great nieces, great nephews other relatives and many dear friends.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold (Martha) Kennedy and Ronald Kennedy; two sisters, Phyllis Kennedy and Dorothea Kennedy; and brothers-in-law, John Korn and James Koehn.

Memorial services honoring and celebrating Kay’s life will be held at Franksville United Methodist Church, 10402 Northwestern Ave., Franksville, on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kaye Glennon officiating. There will be a memorial visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Franksville United Methodist Church Building Fund or Ridgewood Care Center would be appreciated.

Barbara A. (Johnsen) Tuska

Barbara A. Tuska, age 75, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, at her residence. Barbara was born in Kenosha, WI, on February 28, 1933, daughter of the late Alfred and Ethel (Nee: Wood) Johnsen.

On July 11, 1953, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kenosha she was united in marriage to Gerald J. “Jerry” Tuska who preceded her in death, March 15, 2000. Barbara was employed by Kenosha Unified School District as a substitute Art Teacher for fifteen years. She was last working at Boston Store until her retirement in 2002. She and her husband Jerry also co-owned and operated Pub on Wisconsin tavern with their dear friends, Mary and Rich Winters. She enjoyed golfing, and with her artistic flair she designed many beautiful arts and crafts. Above all her devotion to caring for her family will be forever cherished. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her five children, Reed Tuska of Miami, FL, Scott Tuska of Key West, FL, RaeEllen (Bill) Thomson of Racine, Kyle (Kim) Tuska of Waterford and Aaron (Julie) Tuska of Cudahy; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marion Busiteri of Oak Creek, Carol (Ed) Woerner of Cecil, WI, Bob Palen of Fort Lauderdale, FL; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Robert C. Quella Jr.

Robert C. Quella Jr., age 56, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 29, 2009. He was born in Racine on September 1, 1952, to Robert and Delores Quella. Bobby loved his art work and bicycling. Bobby worked in his father’s business, Quella Home Tuning.

He is survived by his mother, Delores Quella; his sister, Cheri (Bill) Flannery; his brothers, Jeff (Ronnie) Quella and Bill (Val) Quella; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Quella Sr.; his brother, Jon Quella; and his grandparents.

John E. Phelan

John E. Phelan, age 74, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center. He was born in Menomonie, WI, on April 3, 1934, son of the late Edward E. and Alice E. (Nee: Weiss) Phelan.

John served as a Navy Corpsman and was an Atomic veteran. He then attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and received his Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. On September 14, 1963, he was united in marriage to Jacqueline M. (Nee: Reif) Phelan who preceded him in death on November 14, 2008. John was employed by Racine Unified School District for twenty-six years and taught fifth grade at Trautwein Elementary and Drivers’ Education at Park High School. Such was John’s dedication to education that, after retirement, he and his wife devoted their own time to home school their grandchildren for nine years. John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. An avid sports fan, accomplished grill master, dedicated teacher, excellent storyteller and listener, he loved helping people. Above all he devoted his life to his family and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his children, Amanda (Bill) Heidenreich of Racine, Edward Phelan of Miami, FL, Vincent (Marissa) Phelan of St. Charles, IL, Rev. Matthew H. Phelan, O. de M. of Philadelphia, PA; his six grandchildren, Kristin, Erica, Allison, and Nicholas Heidenreich, Joshua and Rachel Phelan; sisters, Alice (Mike) Hickey, Mary (Gary) Rients, all of Bemidji, MN; sister-in-law, Virginia Phelan of Sister Bay, WI; brother-in-law, Joel (Rochelle) Reif of Canton, OH; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Arlene Joyce Rygh

CALEDONIA – Arlene Joyce (nee: Streuli) Rygh, 84, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at her residence. She was born in Kenosha on August 5, 1924, the daughter of William and Edna (nee: Kling) Streuli.

Arlene was united in marriage to Mervin S. Rygh at Cross Lutheran Church in Burlington on February 19, 1944. She was a Charter Member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church and attended Calvary Memorial Church for many years. After graduation from Union Grove High School she graduated from Beauty Culture School in Milwaukee. Arlene retired after many years of service with Lutheran Social Services. She took great pride in her cooking and enjoyed gardening, bird watching and spending time with her family.

Linda Marie (Servantez) Fernandez

Linda Marie Fernandez, 56, passed away from a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/All Saints. She was born in Kenosha on Jun 10, 1952, to Antonio and Mary (nee: Salas) Servantez, Sr. She lived most of her life in Racine. She was united in marriage to Arthur Fernandez, Sr. in Racine, on Sept. 9, 2008. She was employed for the City of Racine, in the Environmental and Wic Departments for 16 years. She was a member of Grace Church.

She was a mother to more than just her own children, she was everybody's Tia a good friend and the center of our family. She will be missed dearly by many.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Fernandez, Sr.; children, Arthur Fernandez, Jr., Daniel Fernandez, Tina Espinoza, Joe D. Espinoza, Juan Espinoza, Joseph W. Akabe Kerope Gulbankian

Akabe Kerope Gulbankian, age 93, passed away Tuesday evening, January 27, 2009. Akabe was born in the city of Tallas, a college community and suburb of Kaiseri (Caesaria) in central Asia Minor. Born in the Christian family of the late Kerope and Nouri (nee Vezirian) Gulbankian, Akabe is the last surviving member of all the nine siblings.

As an infant she escaped with her mother and older sisters from the 1915 Genocide of Armenians, during the First World War. They were taken in for six years by an Arab Bedouin Sheik, a friend of the family, in Aleppo, Syria. They briefly went to Damascus, Syria, whereupon the brothers in America arranged to bring the family to the U.S.

She graduated from William Horlick High School and also from Union Grove Normal Teachers College. She briefly taught grammar school in Racine. After this she was a realtor with Racine Realty and had also worked as a paralegal with her brother, George, and sister, Vartak, lawyers of the Gulbankian Law Firm in Racine.

As an Armenian immigrant she had an intense desire to help others. For instance, she taught and helped many immigrant women to pass their citizenship exams. She and her family donated to the Audubon Society, the Love and Charity Mission, ACLU and many other charities. Akabe also donated generously to the building up of Armenia, and most recently to the Armenian village of Nor Gesaria. Akabe cared deeply about the underprivileged and was politically active in Racine.

She always had a smile on her face and had a general love for all those who knew her. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her niece, Virginia McCuin of New York, NY, and by her many cousins: Calouste Gulbenkian of Lisbon, Portugal, David VartBadrigian of Nashville, TN, John Chalikian of Michigan City, IN, Mary Haroutunian of New York City, NY, Teresa Chalikian of Schaumberg, IL, Lucy Torosian of Watertown, MA, Avedis Hintlian of DeKalb, IL, Josephine Bargamian of Tucsonm AZ, Emma Kazaraian of FL, Dr. Hovsep Dermajian of Gurney, IL and many other cousins in Europe and the Near East.

Sandra K. (Malko) Fischer

Sandra K. Fischer, 62, died in the Memorial Hospital of Burlington, on Tuesday, January 27, 2009. She was born in Racine, on November 15, 1946, the daughter of the late Frank and Antoinette (nee: Boehm) Malko.

On November 30, 1963, in St. Mary Catholic Church here in Racine, she was united in marriage to John P. Fischer. Sandy was employed by the Foster-Forbes Glass Co. for over 26 years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Burlington.

Surviving are her husband John P. Fischer Sr.; their children, John (Linda) Fischer Jr., William (Lora) Fischer, Frank (Shelia Renz) Fischer, and Yvonne Johnson, all of Burlington; 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Patricia (Mike) Chizek, Connie (Jim) Peasely, Dan (Joyce) Malko, Debbie (Dan) Stich, all of Racine, and Diane (Stan) Pawlowski of Franklin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob Wierzinski, and Debra Malko, both of Milwaukee, Bob Malsack of Kenosha, and Marge Malko of Peoria, AZ. Leroy E. 'Lee' Andersen

Leroy E. “Lee” Andersen, 88, passed away unexpectedly at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center on Tuesday, January 27, 2009.

A lifetime resident, Lee was born in Racine on December 1, 1920, to the late Alfred and Christine (nee: Petersen) Andersen. He graduated from Washington Park High School in 1938.

On August 12, 1944, in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lee was united in marriage with the love of his life, Ione Marie Stindle, who preceded him in death on April 14, 1998.

In August of 1946, he founded Lee’s True Value Hardware at 2051 Taylor Ave. With a profound work ethic and a reputation of honesty, the hardware store continued to succeed with earned respect in our community. The store has been located at its current address, 1950 Taylor Ave., since 1982, a Racine tradition being carried on by his son, Jerry.

A true family man of Christian faith, Lee was a lifetime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Christian Men’s Association and had served on the Board of Directors for Lincoln Lutheran. Among his interests, he enjoyed photography, woodworking and tending to his yard, especially his rose garden. Above all, Lee loved and cherished being in the surroundings of his entire family – especially his treasured grandchildren.

Surviving are his children, Pam (Neill) Frame of Lake Geneva; Linda Sue (the late James Hass) Andersen of Chevy Chase, MD; and Jerry (Mary Jane) Andersen of Racine; grandchildren, Zachary and LeAnne Frame; Andrew and Christopher Hass; Sarah, Emily, Peter, Molly and Michael Andersen; brother-in-law, Robert Clauer of Racine; nieces and nephew, Connie (David) Jones of Spring Valley; Julie (Hans) Richter of Uppsala, Sweden; and Garrick (Lisa) Stindle of Racine; and many other special relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.

Edith O. Gagnon

Edith O. (nee: Olsen) Gagnon, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 26, 2009, at the age of 89. Born in 1919 in Skien, Norway, she immigrated to the United States in 1923 with her parents, Trygve and Anne Olsen, and her older sister, Borgne (Benjamin) Eckblad and settled in Racine, where she spent the rest of her life. Her younger sister, Mildred (Dan) Elstrom, was born in Racine.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, LeRoy ‘Scotty’ Scott and Glenn Gagnon. Loving mother of Ronald (Beverly) Scott and Thomas (Karen) Scott; caring stepmother of Jean Gagnon; dear grandmother of Stephen Scott, Stephanie (Ric) Shanks, and Christopher Scott; proud great-grandmother of Emily and Elizabeth Shanks; fond aunt of nieces and nephews.

A graduate of William Horlick High School, Edith worked at the Farmers and Merchants Bank and the Racine Unified School District. She was an active member of Racine Bible Church for over fifty years, teaching Sunday school classes and conducting Bible studies. She loved socializing with and entertaining her family and friends, attending church activities, cooking and baking, knitting, traveling, and playing a good game of Scrabble. Her presence will be missed.

Edward Jerome Uminski

Edward Jerome Uminski, 94, passed away with his family at his side at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/All Saints on Sunday, January 25, 2009. He was born in Racine, on June 30, 1914, to the late Theodore and Stella (nee: Wroblewski) Uminski. He lived all of his life in Racine.

He was united in marriage to the former Stella Piotrak on June 25, 1938, in Racine. She preceded him in death on March 24, 1958. He was then united in marriage to the former Lorraine Crozier on June 1, 1968, in Racine, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 2003. He was a graduate of St. Catherine's High School, Class of 1932.

He was employed at Massey Ferguson from 1936-1975, retiring after 39 years. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church (until closure), St. Stanislaus trustee, usher, member of the Holy Name Society, and then became a member at St. Richard's Catholic Church, Massey Ferguson 20-year Club and bowling league.

Edward was a devoted and loving husband and father. He loved the family vacations up north in the summer and fall and being together celebrating birthdays and holidays.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gail (Carl) Rosenquist of Racine; son-in-law, Joe Orth and his wife, Jan; grandchildren, Dawn Stellmach of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Anne Carter of Mocksville, NC, Aimee (Chris) Sackman, Franksville, Christine (Bryan) Schultz, Whitefish Bay, Bradley Rosenquist, Milwaukee; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Stellmach, Jake Carter, Madelyn Schultz, Jonathan and Lauren Sackman; sister, Eleanor White; step-daughter, Marilee (Ken) Dunham and her family. He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Marilyn Scheppe on April 11, 1992, and Elaine Orth on August 26, 1999, and brother Bernard.

Russell Earl Burks

Russell Earl Burks, 85, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center on Sunday, January 25, 2009.

A lifetime resident, Russell was born in Racine on November 20, 1923, to the late Earl and Frances (nee: Hobson) Burks. He proudly served our Country with the United States Navy in WWII, aboard the USS Henrico, from 1944-46 as a 2nd Class Motor Machinists Mate.

On July 3, 1948, in Racine, he was united in marriage with Evelyn Viola Vivian (nee: Bates). Russell was employed by Seven-Up Bottling Co. for over 32 years, retiring as a service manager in 1986. Shortly after, he realized retirement was not going to be for him. Thus, Russell began working for NAPA Auto Parts in Sturtevant, a position he kept for over 16 years.

Russ was a member of the Teamsters Local 43. Among his interests, he enjoyed attending Air Shows, listening to Country-Western music, and cheering on the Packers and Cubs. Above all, Russell loved and cherished being in the surroundings of his entire family.

Surviving are his loving wife of over 60 years, Evelyn; their children, Russell (Kathy) Burks Jr. of Seattle, WA, Vicki (Carl) Wells of Racine, Richard (Tamara) Burks of Richfield, and Janet Lawrey of Racine; daughter-in-law, Kim Sieverkropp-Burks of Racine; 6 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Grace) Burks; sister-in-law, Mary Burks; many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.

In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his beloved son, Kenneth Burks, in 2001; brothers, Harold (Esther), Ken (Tobe), Don (Marie) and Joe Burks; and sister, Evelyn (LeRoy) Christensen.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 1 p.m. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Thursday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. In accordance with Russell’s wishes, private interment services for the family, with military honors, will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Mary Margarette Welker

Madison (formerly of Racine) – Mary Margarette Welker, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Oak Park Place in Madison on Saturday, January 24, 2009.

Mary was born in Racine on July 10, 1921, to the late James and Laura (nee: Todd) Welker. A graduate of Washington Park High School, she went on to attend college for a few years. Subsequently, Mary became a proficient secretary at Massey-Ferguson, a position she held until her retirement in 1982.

Mary was a longtime member of Taylor Avenue Church of the Nazarene. With a profound love of ceramic art, she owned and operated Mary’s Clay Castle where she taught ceramics to many artists (of all skill levels) in our community. Later in life, Mary developed an interest in genealogy. As part of this, she produced a detailed history of her family, dating back a few hundred years. Above all, she was extremely proud of all her nieces and nephews, many of whom she helped raise for a period of time.

Surviving are her 17 special nieces and nephews, especially her longtime caretaker, Joyce (Kurt) Kaspar of Cottage Grove; and by her devoted friends, Greg Allen, Linda Anderson; Mary and Sam Charbogian & family; Mr. And Mrs. Charles Hardy, Bonnie Klemick, Gena Lichty, Stella Wyma and Gladys Beier. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold, Earl, Floyd and Albert Welker; and her faithful canine companions, Topsy and Moffette.

Funeral services will be held at Taylor Avenue Church of the Nazarene, 2100 Taylor Ave., on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. David F. Monroe officiating. Angela M. Jacobsen

Angela (nee: Stefaniak) Jacobsen, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2009.

She was a born in Elizabeth, NJ, on August 25, 1922, the daughter of John and Mary (nee: Jablonski) Stefaniak. Angela moved with her second husband to Racine, his boyhood home, in 1965. She enjoyed sewing, Polish cooking and homemaking. Although Angela will be sadly missed here, God’s kitchen has received and wonderful cook and baker.

Dearest mother of Marie (Roger) Stewart, Lou (Annie) Jacobsen, Elaine (Mark) Helminiak, Susan (Jim) Sukopp and Barbara Jacobsen. Beloved grandmother of Sara and Emily Stewart, Mallory and Lou Jacobsen IV, and Stacy (Matt)Dennis. Adoring great-grandmother to Dominic Dennis. She is further survived by other loving relatives and dear friends.

Angela was preceded in death by her loving husbands; Louis S. Jacobsen and Peter J. Wolent.

Dennis J. Caruso

Dennis J. Caruso, age 53, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center. Dennis was born in Ironwood, MI, on February 11, 1955, son of Enrico J. and Evelyn J. (Nee: Conhartoski) Caruso.

Sister Renée Van Himbergen, O.P.

Sister Renée Van Himbergen, O.P., 88, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine on Friday, January 23, 2009.

Louise Van Himbergen was born May 31, 1920, to Henry and Gertrude (nee: Van Heeswyke) Van Himbergen in Kimberly, WI. On August 30, 1938, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1939 she was given the religious name Sister Renée. She professed her first vows in January 1942 and her final vows in 1948.

Sister Renée spent many years in service to others in teaching. She began her ministry in 1941 at St. Victor, Monroe, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were SS. Peter & Paul, Green Bay; St. Mary, Janesville; Holy Trinity and St. Lucy, Racine; Holy Cross, Kaukauna; St. Bernard, Madison; St. John, Little Chute; St. Pius, Wauwatosa; and St. Leo, Milwaukee. She also served in New Mexico, Michigan and Louisiana. In 1991 she moved to Siena Center, Racine, WI. She became a resident at Golden Living Center, Kenosha, WI, in December 2006 and moved to Lakeshore Manor, Racine, in October 2008.

Sister Renée is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brother Richard (Peg); brother-in-law, Larry W. Schutte; her sister-in-law, Margaret Van Himbergen; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers Harry A. (Lydia), George, C. Jack and Francis (Marge); and sisters Anne (Joe) Frye, Marie Schutte, Kathleen (Clarence) Smith, and Virginia Van Himbergen.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Tuesday, January 27, beginning at 9 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

Kenneth A. Stofen

Kenneth Arthur Stofen, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2009, at his home in the company of his family. Ken was born on February 1, 1922, to Herb and Tillie (nee: Pie) Stofen.

On August 25, 1945, Ken was united in marriage to Dorothy Kuhlman in Racine. Ken was a sales consultant by profession and an avid inventor, holding a patent for his energy efficient Compressed Air System. He enjoyed playing cards with his Hearts Club and was an active member of Atonement Lutheran Church.

Ken was a devoted and loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Ken (Cathy) Stofen; daughter, Deb (Jesse) McDaniel; grandson, Matthew Stofen; brother, Milfred “Pep” (Mary) Stofen; sister, Lorraine Georgeson; sister-in-law, Mary Kuhlman; nieces, Pam Holmes, Susan Siefert, Tina Gilloffo, Shannon Funk; nephews, Bruce Kuhlman, Richard Stofen, and Randy Georgeson.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob Georgeson, Kate Stofen, Frank Kuhlman, Tony and Marie Galizanski, and niece Jackie Forner.

Henry Talaga

Henry Talaga, 88, passed away on January 23, 2009, at Ruth Hospice in West Allis.

Mr. Talaga was born in Slovan, Pennsylvania, on October 24, 1920, to the late Michael and Mary Talaga and lived in Racine for most of his life. On November 28, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary Gurosh in Dubuque, Iowa.

Mr. Talaga was employed at Young Radiator as a punch operator for over 40 years before his retirement in 1982. He was also an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Henry is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-laws, Michael (Carol) Talaga of Greendale and John (Sandra) Talaga of Naples, FL; his grandchildren; his great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Syring of Racine and Helen Gru of Chicago, IL; one brother, Fred Nawrocki of Merriville, IN; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Henry was preceded in death by his wife Mary, along with three brothers and one sister.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 6400 Spring St., on Friday, January 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Fr. William J. Dietzler officiating. Alvin F. Ziegenhagen

Alvin F. Ziegenhagen, age 81, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Kenosha Hospital. Alvin was born in Fond Du Lac, WI, on July 26, 1927, son of the late Alvin D. and Jeanette (Nee: Merry) Ziegenhagen.

During World War II and the Korean War Alvin served in the United States Marine Corps. In June of 1956 he was united in marriage to Eleanor J. Hengst who preceded him in death in March 2003. Alvin was employed by Racine Steel Castings for thirty-nine years until his retirement in 1996 and belonged to their “20 Year Club.” He will be sadly missed.

Survivors include his children, Todd (Dawn) Ziegenhagen of Racine, Jody Maldonado of South Carolina; his six grandchildren, Todd Jr., Nicholas, Lexy, Alyson, Shannon and Brandon; sister Barbara Bennett; sisters-in-law, Doris Wohlgemuth and LaVerne Bednar; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward and sister, Merlin.

Harry E. Goodwin

Harry E. Goodwin, 86, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/All Saints. He was born in Somers, WI, on Dec. 21, 1922, to the late Harry E. and Montie (nee: Bolus) Goodwin. He lived most of his life in Racine. He was united in marriage to the former Lucille Thrasher in Racine on March 25, 1944.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, retiring from the Air Force Reserves in 1982. He was employed at Young Radiator as a machinist for 42 years, retiring in 1983.

He was an active member of First Church of God, 440th Alumni Association, Wisconsin Sheriffs Deputy Sheriffs Association, Air Force Sergeants Association and EAA.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Goodwin; his children, Kathy Goodwin, Rick (Connie) Goodwin, Eric Goodwin; six grandchildren, David (Lindsey), Jennifer, Patrick (Rikki), Brian, Craig and Michael; one great-grandson, Jackson; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by a daughter Joan, two brothers, and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at First Church of God, 1650 Lathrop Ave., on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at noon with Pastor David Andrews officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors at West Lawn Memorial Park. Preston S.Cagle

Preston S. Cagle, age 54, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Milwaukee, WI. Preston was born in Racine on January 10, 1955, son of George L. and Josephine M. (Nee: Delcorps) Cagle. Preston was a self-employed carpenter for many years.

Sylvia Ann Thompson

Sylvia (nee: Sheleski) Thompson, 80, passed away on Wednesday, January, 21, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints. She was born in Menasha, Wisconsin, on February 17, 1928, the daughter of John Sr. and Martha (nee: Scjeck) Sheleski.

Sylvia graduated from Menasha High School, class of “1946." She was a faithful member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church. Sylvia retired from Racine Unified School District Food Service Department as a cook. She found great enjoyment in playing Bingo, cards, crocheting and especially being with her family.

Sylvia is survived by her children; Mark E. Thompson of Punta Gorda, FL, Nona (William Sr.) Besaw of Kaukauna, and Cindy (Guy) Lemke of Kenosha; four grandchildren, Jeremy Mizzen, Tara Besaw, Sara Besaw and Adam Thompson; four great-grandchildren, Kali, Kara, Hunter and Arianna; brother, Robert Sheleski, sister, Frances Sheleski and former husband, Dallas Thompson of Menasha. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Hillard and John Sheleski, and one sister, Marie Klein.

Charles C. 'Chuck' Davies

Charles C. “Chuck” Davies, age 84, passed away Monday, January 19, 2009, at Parkside Manor in Kenosha. Charles was born in Racine, December 31, 1924, son of the late David Hopkins and Elizabeth Inez (nee: Rowlands) Davies and had been a lifelong resident.

He graduated from Washington Park High School “Class of 1943.” During World War II, Chuck proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Knox stationed in the South Pacific. On September 4, 1948, he married the love of his life, Rosemary LaFrania, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Chuck was employed with the Racine Fire Department from January 1953 until January 1985, when he retired as Captain. He was a member of the City of Racine 20-Year Club, the Ridgerunner Square Dance Club, and the Dividend Club. In his younger years he loved fast pitch baseball and pitched for City League Teams. Chuck had a lifelong passion for table tennis and as a senior he became Wisconsin State Champion and Arizona State Champion in the same year for his age group. Through the years Chuck enjoyed camping, traveling, winters in Arizona, but it was his time spent with his family, especially the bicycle trail trips and the canoe trip on the Wisconsin River, that gave him the most pleasure. He will be deeply missed.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Rosemary; his children, Dennis (Laura) Davies of Minneapolis, MN, Gwen (Jim) Daly, Peggy (Mike) Konieczko all of Racine; six grandchildren, Ryan and Alex Davies, Matthew and Katie Daly, Kevin and Sarah Konieczko; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Daly; his brothers, David W. Davies and N. Owen (Dorothy) Davies; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy (David) Kading, Barbara (Chris) Valley, Wayne LaFrania; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to his parents, Chuck was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Betty Davies and his aunt Mabel Rowlands.

Jose Luis Ray Martinez

Jose Luis Ray Martinez, age 48, passed away Monday January 19, 2009. Jose was born in Salinas, Mexico, August 25, 1960, son of Margarito and Maria (Nee: Escovedo) Rocha. He was employed by Eders Nursery for many years.

Survivors include his mother, Maria Escovedo of Salinas, Mexico; his four children, Luis (Diana) Martinez of Racine, Margarito (Rosa) Martinez, Mercedes Martinez and Rogelio Martinez, all of Mexico; 11 grandchildren; 19 brothers and sisters; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers.

Ladis P. Zahalka

Ladis “Laddie” P. Zahalka, age 89, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009. Ladis was born in Racine on February 26, 1919, son of the late Ladis and Frances (Nee:Gondert) Zahalka.

Ladis graduated from Wm Horlick High School “Class of 1936” and it was in 1936 that while golfing he made the first “Hole in One” of the season at Washington Park Golf Course. During WWII, Ladis served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 36th Bomber Squad.

On November 16, 1946, in Racine he was united in marriage to Ann Dudish who preceded him in death, May 17, 2005. Ladis was employed by Western Publishing Co for over 45 years retiring in 1984 and had been a member of Local 577 for the past 70 years. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the many fishing trips to Canada with his wife. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his brothers, Donald (Jean) Zahalka of Oshkosh,WI, William Zahalka of Racine; his sister, Betty Zahalka of Racine; sister-in-law, Margaret Orban of Racine; nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. Janice K. Leibel-Cikel

Mrs. Janice K. Leibel-Cikel, 61, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare/All Saints on Sunday, January 18, 2009.

Mrs. Liebel-Cikel was to the late McClaren and Bernice (nee: Chaab) Leibel in Peoria, IL on December 8, 1947 and had lived in Racine for most of her life. She had been united in marriage to Jerome Cikel for over 22 years, and had worked as a math teacher at Park High School for 25 years.

Janice is survived by her loving husband, Jerome; her sister, Cheryl (Bill) Bellot of Chatham, IL; her brother, Lonny Leibel of Peoria, IL; and many brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Sandra A. 'Sandie' Sessa

Sandra A. Sessa, 68, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in Wheaton Franciscan Hospital-All Saints.

She was born in Racine on March 4, 1940, the daughter of the late Henry and LaVerne (nee: Hahn) Potthoff. Sandie graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1958.

She worked at J.C. Penny for over 20 years in the women’s accessory department. On April 25, 1959, she married Gene N. Sessa at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church. They would have celebrated their 50th Anniversary this coming April.

Sandie was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church. She enjoyed Bingo, taking gambling trips, cooking, crocheting, and most importantly spending time with grandchildren.

Surviving are her devoted husband, Gene; their children, Tamra (Fred) Radspinner of Racine, Eugene G. Sessa of Nashville, TN, Theresa (James) Bishop, Dianna (Scott) Taleck all of Racine; five grandchildren, Stephanie Bishop, Kristy Radspinner, Jimmy Bishop, Sammi and Megan Taleck; special friend and “sister,” Evie Loughan; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, her sister, Donna, preceded her in death.

Her life and funeral service will be celebrated in the funeral home on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Ronald J. Gramza officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family has suggested memorials to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Gerald 'Jerry' A. Hendricks

Gerald “Jerry” A. Hendricks, age 86, passed away Friday, January 16, 2009, at Ridgewood Care Center. Jerry was born in Racine on February 20, 1922, son of the late Peter J. and Irene (Nee: Dickman) Hendricks.

Jerry was a graduate and 1st violinist at Washington Park High School. Jerry owned and operated Hendricks Motors, the first Volkswagen dealership in Racine. He also owned and operated the first snowmobile dealership. An avid boater, Jerry, along with three others, founded the Harbor Lite Yacht Club where he served as Commodore for three terms and was the proud owner of Gypsy III. Not limited to the land or water, Jerry was a licensed pilot who logged over 4,000 miles in the air flying all over the country. A skilled woodworker, he made hundreds of wooden creations including model cars, furniture and lamps. More than anything, Jerry treasured time spent with his family and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Muriel “Mur” A. (Nee: Gunderson); his two sons, Mark Hendricks and David Hendricks, both of Racine; two daughters, Sharon Hendricks of Kenosha and Rita (Brian) Staudenrauss of Sturgeon Bay, WI; stepson, Patrick (Kathy) Tuttle of MD; eight grandchildren, Andrew, Ryan, Danny, Todd, Stacey, Kim, Drew and Michelle; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Dorothy Hendrickson of Arkansas and LaVerne Vanderzee of Racine; sister-in-law, Elaine Andersen of Waukesha; former daughter-in-law and still family, Nancy Hendricks of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife, Katherine (nee: Maupin) in 1970, and a grandson, Merrit.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rita Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Ave., on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Joseph G. Stobba O.S.A. officiating. Interment will be held at St. Louis Cemetery, Caledonia. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.

Dennis A. Baumgardt

Surrounded by his family, Dennis Anthony Baumgardt peacefully passed away in his home on January 16, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dennis was born in Racine on July 13, 1938, to Richard and Blanche (nee: O’Neil) Baumgardt.

He graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in 1956. Dennis played trombone in High School and with the SC Johnson Band. He served in the United States Navy for six years, two of those years on active duty aboard the destroyer USS John Paul Jones. He was employed by J.I. Case, now CNH, for 47 ½ years in the finance area, retiring in 2004 as the Manager of Payroll Tax Reporting. He was a member of the 20-Year Club where he served as secretary and treasurer.

Dennis was a lifelong member of St. John Nepomuk Church. He was a member of the church choir, Director of the Youth Choir, taught religion classes, served as a Eucharistic Minister, served on the Catholic Association of Racine, and Parish Council.

For over 20 years he was involved with the Boy Scouts of America. He received the Silver Beaver Award along with numerous awards for his service and leadership roles. Dennis was always helping the youth through his example and leadership.

On October 15, 1960, at St John Nepomuk Church he was united in marriage to Mary Jane (Simanek) with whom he shared 48 years and five children. He had a great love for his family, and spent many happy days with them camping and sharing his love of the outdoors.

Dennis will be dearly missed by his wife Mary Jane; his children, Theresa (Daniel) Braun of Racine, Jane Thomas (friend, Brian Bautz) of Brookfield, Katherine (Alan) McCauley of Greendale, Anthony (Tanya) Baumgardt of Racine, and Beth (Jeffry) Steinbach of Mankato, Minnesota; along with twelve grandchildren, Elizabeth and James Braun, Matthew and Adam Thomas, Adalyn, Clare, and Johnathan McCauley, Margaret and Isabelle Baumgardt, Stephanie, Jacqueline, and Jesse Steinbach.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Paul) Riha; his brother George (Mary) Baumgardt; and sisters-in-law, Patricia Baumgardt, Lucille Simanek, Adeline Simanek, Lillian Slaasted, Sister Mary Alice Simanek, SSSF, Sister Frances Simanek, SSSF, Ruth Simanek, Marjorie (Robert) Wood and JoAnn (Claude) Wells; brothers-in-law Wencil "Jim" (Helen) Simanek, Jerome (Patricia) Simanek; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends.

In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond; step-mother Valeria Baumgardt; in-laws Joseph F. and Frances Simanek; brothers-in-law Leo Simanek, Joseph Simanek, Valerian (Larry) Simanek, Richard Simanek, Ralph Slaasted, and sister-in-law, Christine Simanek.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, 700 English St., with Reverend Don Zerkel officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow at Calvary Garden Crypts. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society or St. John Nepomuk Parish have been suggested.

Donald Oscar Leonhardt

Donald O. Leonhardt, 75, passed away at his home on Friday, January 16, 2009.

Mr. Leonhardt was born in Racine County on August, 20, 1933, to the late Alex and Molly Leonhardt and had lived his entire life in Racine. In November 1969, he was united in marriage to Donna Mae Johnson, who preceded him in death on May 4, 2008.

Mr. Leonhardt had been employed at Young Radiator for over 30 years. He proudly served in the United States Army and was an active member of V.F.W. Post 1931.

Donald is survived by his children, Robin Julius, Brian (Margaretta) Leonhardt and Tracy Garcia; ten grandchildren, Cory (Johanna), Danny, Billy, Holly, Sirena, Dillon, Donna, Margaretta, Maria and Edwardo; two great-grandsons, Justin and Luis Javier; and one brother, Marvin Leonhardt.

Funeral services for Mr. Leonhardt will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home, on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Daniel Feldscher officiating. Internment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Judith Ann Sullivan

Judith Ann (nee: Tomes) Sullivan, 50, passed away peacefully at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center on Thursday, January 15, 2009.

Judy was born in Milwaukee on June 3, 1958, to John and Patricia (nee: Wieczorek). She lived in Racine for most of her life. She attended J.I. Case high school with the graduating class of 1976.

On June 13, 1980, in St. Edward Catholic Church, she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Michael Patrick Sullivan. Passionate about her family, Judy fulfilled her childhood dream of being a full-time wife and mother – a vocation she absolutely excelled at.

Judy was a devoted member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. While her children were in school, she was involved with the St. Lucy Athletic Association. For the past 15 years, she was in charge (along with her husband – Michael) of the annual St. Lucy Festival – Market Square Meat Raffle, raising thousands of dollars for her church. Extremely talented with her hands, Judy’s passions were baking, handcrafting and needlework, which she selflessly shared. Above all, Judy always placed her family and friends as priority one in life.

Diagnosed with ovarian cancer 16 years ago and undergoing countless rounds of treatment, Judy never lost her zest for life. She truly was an inspiration to everyone around her. May she rest in peace.

Surviving are her broken-hearted husband, Michael; sons, Brian Edward Tomes, Christopher Sean Tomes and Eric John (Shannon) Sullivan; grandchildren, Christopher Tomes, Jr. and Kyla Marie Sullivan; mother, Patricia Tomes; brother, Jim Tomes; sisters, Linda Tomes-Thorn, Jean Tomes and Hedy (Daniel) Pflugrad; mother-in-law, Janet Sullivan; sisters-in-law, Barb (Chuck) Albee and Marygail “DeeDee” Sullivan; brothers-in-law, Dave (Becky) Sullivan and Kerry Sullivan; nephews and nieces, Jim Jr., Robert (Erin) and Stephanie Tomes; Tim, Tom and Erin Pflugrad; Evan Thorn; Sean, Kory and Katie Sullivan; Sara Albee; Molly (Santino) VanDerWielen; and many loving and close friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave., with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. and in the church on Monday from 10-11 a.m.

A heartfelt note of thanks to Dr. Richard Odders and the entire staff of All Saints Cancer Center, and hospital unit 2D, not only for their compassionate care, but for their years of friendship and support during Judy’s journey with cancer. May God bless all of you!
