Zita M. (Yentz) Olson

Zita M. Olson, age 87, passed away on Sunday, November 16, 2008. Zita was born in Green Bay, WI, on May 26, 1921 to Ervin and Grace (Nee: Kiernan) Yentz.

Zita is survived by sons, Carl Bergemann of Denver, CO, Steven (Julie) Bergemann of West Bend, WI; granddaughters, Jennifer (Seth) Horzen of Sheboygan, WI, Gretchen Bergemann of Reno, NV, Elizabeth (Brett) Jaffe of Reno, NV; precious great-granddaughters, Katrina, Caitlyn, and Isabella Horzen of Sheboygan; a sister, Caroline (Richard) Kasel of St. Paul, MN; sisters-in-law, Jean Yentz of Wauwatosa, WI, Dorothy Yentz of Phoenixville, PA, and many highly valued nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert E. Olson, and brothers, Thomas and Jerome Yentz.

Zita taught First Grade for 35 years mostly in Racine Unified. She was a member of REA, WREA, NEA, Alpha Delta Kappa University of Women, GFWC of Racine, and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, November 21, 2008, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring St., with Rev. William J. Dietzler officiating. Private entombment will be held at Holy Cross Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to one’s favorite charity have been suggested.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staffs at both Hospice Alliance and Heartland Hospice for all of their loving and compassionate care.

Bernice H. (Harmann) Schiestle

Bernice H. Schiestle, age 78, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008, at her residence. Bernice was born in Racine on February 12. 1930, daughter of the late Norman and Emma (Nee: Steinke) Harmann.

Bernice was a graduate of Washington Park High School. She was united in marriage to Larry Schiestle who preceded her in death March of 1997. Her pastimes include gardening, and knitting and crocheting for her children and grandchildren. She was a loving and giving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who always placed others' needs before her own. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her children, Evelyn (James) Good of Union Grove, WI, Renee (John) Stanton of Racine, WI, Barbara (David) Guth of Franksville, WI, Robert (Marilyn) Krause of Alaska; her grandchildren, Tony (Susan) Good, Heather Good, Jennifer Collins, Michael (Sarah) Collins, Christopher (Taylor) Collins, Molly Stanton, Matthew (Tricia) Guth, Steven (Becky) Guth, Chris (Mary) Trottier; her great-grandchildren, Max, Isabelle, Megan, Jacob, Anna, Logan, Sophia, Lauren, and Ava; sisters-in-law, Beverly (Bob) Albertson of Kenosha, WI, Eileen (Jeff) Stropes of Racine, WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Amanda Guth-Trottier; and brothers, Norm and Ted Harmann.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 7 p.m. Private interment will be held. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, have been suggested.

Rose J. Johnson

Rose J. Johnson, 74, left this world on Saturday, November 15, 2008.

She leaves behind her children, Robin LaFollette (Joe), Craig Johnson, and Carrie Clemons (Chris Green). In addition, she is survived by five grandchildren, Lauren, Nathan, Nicholas, Kyren and Andrew. Their lives were each special to their Grandma Rose. A courageous woman who endured many odds, she will be truly missed. At her request, arrangements will be private.

Joanne E. Steberl

Joanne Elizabeth (nee: Olson) Steberl was called to her Lord on Friday, November 14, 2008, at her residence surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Joanne was born in Racine to Robert E. and Betty (nee: Cooley) Olson and resided in Racine all her life. She was united in marriage to Robert E. Steberl at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Racine on April 4, 1964.

Mrs. Steberl attended Washington Park High School, and graduated from the Racine College of Cosmetology and received her Wisconsin state license. She practiced in Racine until she started working with R.C.O.C. and Society's Asset. There she provided home health care for many years where she gained much satisfaction helping those in need.

Mrs. Steberl was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, exercising and sewing. Most importantly she loved being with her family and friends. She will be missed very much by her family, friends, and by all who she touched with compassionate love and care on an everyday basis.

Joanne is survived by her husband Robert; two children, Lisa (David) Peterson and Matt (Susie) Steberl; four grandchildren, Katy and Samantha Peterson, and Taryn and Katarina Steberl; one great grandson, Mason Peterson;one brother, Jeff (Belinda) Olson; one sister, Sue (Jack) Krueger; one aunt, Enid Spaight; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. and Betty Olson; and one brother, Robert L. Olson.

A memorial prayer vigil will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2008, at 7 p.m. Inurnment will be at Mound Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Tuesday, from 4 until 7 p.m.

Darrell D. Hanson

PEMBINE, WI – Darrell D. Hanson, 66, formerly of Racine, passed away Friday morning, November 14, 2008. at his residence, following a brief, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Racine to George and Viola (Nee: Pulda) Hanson on April 29, 1942.

He attended William Horlick High School. He also served in the U.S. Army. On July 7, 1969, he was united in marriage to Nancy Trump. Darrell was employed at Webster Electric/Danfoss as an industrial electrician. Upon retirement, Darrell and Nancy fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to the North Woods of Wisconsin in the town of Pembine, where they would spend all of their vacation time. Darrell loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed gardening, kayaking, wood working, but his favorite pastime was fly fishing. He will be dearly and deeply missed by all who knew him.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife Nancy; their five children, Robin (Arthur) Thomas, Linda (Ronald) Georgeson, Henry (Tess) Zies, Tom (Karen) Zies, and Wendy (Jonah) Marciniak; eight grandchildren, Sara, Christy, Rachel, James, Josh, Nick, Mike and Izariah; seven great-grandchildren Brandon, Andrew, Ashley, Marissa, Abigail, Sammy and Kaylynn; sisters, Esther Blank and Marilyn Acklam; many cousins, nieces and nephews; also his beloved Rex and Rosie. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Hanson; and a sister, Arlene Foley.

Jacqueline M. Phelan

Jacqueline M. Phelan, age 67, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008, at her residence. Jacqueline was born in Milwaukee, WI, on November 4, 1941, daughter of the late Sol H. and Ethel (Nee: Formann) Reif.

Jacqueline was a graduate of Whitefish Bay High School and in her younger years was an actress and director at the Jewish Community Center in Milwaukee. On September 14, 1963, she was united in marriage to John E. Phelan. Jacqueline was employed by Racine Unified School District for a number of years as a teacher’s assistant. Jacqueline was actively involved as a Pro Life Advocate and local organizer of the Life Chain. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching and classical music. Above all, she devoted her life to her family and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her husband, John; her children, Amanda (Bill) Heidenreich of Racine, Edward Phelan of Miami, FL, Vincent (Marissa) Phelan of St. Charles, IL, Rev. Matthew H. Phelan, O. de M. of Philadelphia, PA; her six grandchildren, Kristin, Erica, Allison, and Nicholas Heidenreich, Joshua and Rachel Phelan; brother, Joel (Rochelle) Reif of Canton, OH; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alice (Mike) Hickey, Mary (Gary) Rients, all of Bemidji, MN, Virginia Phelan of Sister Bay, WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., on Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Rev. John D. Aiello and Jacqueline’s son, Rev. Matthew Phelan, O. de M. and his religious confreres concelebrating. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers or donations, requests for an act of kindness that is pleasing in God’s eyes for the repose of the soul of Jacqueline Phelan have been suggested.

Kenneth Hamm

Kenneth Lee Hamm, age 85, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008, at United Hospital in Kenosha. He was born in Princeton, IL, November 12, 1923, son of the late David and Clara (Nee: Swanson) Hamm.

Ken served as a corporal in the U.S. Army 114th Infantry Division during WWII stationed in the European Theatre and had received the Bronze Star. On June 18, 1949, at Oak Park, IL he was united in marriage to Janice E. VanZile.

Ken graduated from Carthage College, received his master's degree from the University of Illinois and PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Iowa. He was employed by Carthage College as a Professor of Chemistry for 41 years retiring in 1989 as head of the Science-Math Division. In 1971 Ken was the first recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award. He was a member of Bethania Lutheran Church. His hobbies included: golfing, traveling, reading and flying as a small aircraft pilot.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janice; two daughters, Diane (William) Katt of Kenosha, WI; Janet (Joe) Teeters of Laurel, MD; grandchildren, Ryan Katt of Waukesha, WI, and Kendra Katt of Kenosha, WI; sisters, Joan Mercer and Barbara (Jim) Rife; sister-in-law, Ernestine Hamm; other relatives and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David.

Funeral services will be held at Bethania Lutheran Church, 4120 Wright Ave., on Monday, November 17, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Steve Wohfiel officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Sunday from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Private interment will be held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hamm Endowed Scholarship at Carthage College.
