Mary T. (Krescanko) Secanky

Mary T. Secanky, age 96, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Becker-Shoop Center. She was born in Racine, January 26, 1915, daughter of the late Albert and Katarina (Nee: Schlossar) Krescanko.

Mary graduated from Washington Park High School “Class of 1933.” On January 6, 1934, she was united in marriage to Joseph B. Secanky, who preceded her in death on June 6, 2000. Mary had been employed by SC Johnson in her early years then worked for Zahn’s Department Store in the financial office. She was then employed by the City of Racine as secretary for the city attorney, retiring from City Hall in 1979.

She was a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and had attended St. Sebastian’s Catholic Church. She became a lifetime member of the Catholic Slovak Sokol and had often performed in plays at Slovak Hall, where she met her husband, Joseph. Although her time was spent between work and taking care of her family, Mary used her free time to write poetry and personal essays, a pursuit she followed into her 90s. Her writing was published in the Renaissance Magazine as well as area newspapers. She will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Jo Kaiserlian of Racine; son, Tom (Linda) Secanky of Lakewood, WI; four grandchildren, Becky (Andy) Aldag of Washington, D.C., Joseph Secanky of Somers, WI, Lisa (Kurt) Gray of Bradenton, FL, Michelle Kaiserlian and husband, Jason Hoogerhyde of Roundrock, TX; four great-grandchildren, Emily and Ava Aldag, Evan Gray, and Joseph Secanky; a great-granddaughter, Olivia; a brother, Frank Krescanko of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Kaiserlian; a grandson, David Kaiserlian; a sister, Tonia Jensen; and brother, Albert Krescanko.

Relatives and friends may meet on Tuesday from 6 p.m. at the funeral home until time of service. A Prayer Service will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at 7 p.m. with Reverend Richard Molter officiating. Private interment will be held Holy Cross Cemetery, Kinzie Avenue. In lieu of flowers, memorials to one’s favorite charity have been suggested.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at the Becker - Shoop Center for their loving and compassionate care.
