Hugh Ambrose MacDonald

Hugh Ambrose MacDonald, 80, passed away at home surrounded by the love of his family on Wednesday, January 2, 2014. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 21, 1933, to Wilfred Patrick MacDonald and Margaret Belle (McGillivary) and was married to his beloved wife, JoAnn (Smith), on January 17, 1953.

Nothing brought greater joy to Hugh than his wife and children: Christine Tutlewski (Tim), Hugh Michael MacDonald, Catherine Scoon (Michael), Michael MacDonald (Soon), John MacDonald, M.D. (Kristen), Carol Gregory (Mark), Patty Thomas (Brian), Kevin MacDonald (Jana), Robert MacDonald (Cheryl), Keith MacDonald (Norma), Mary Jo Kramer (Rick), Ronald MacDonald (Marguerite), and Amy MacDonald; grandchildren: Erik Fanning (Christine), Karen Fish (David), Zachary Tutlewski; Margy Farley (Robert), Jayson Scoon (Mandy), Bridget Slaasted (Jason), Stefan Scoon; Roberta MacDonald, Daniel MacDonald (Emily); Kyle MacDonald(Sandy), Ryan MacDonald (Colleen); Megan Bray (Ross), Ben Gregory (Michelle), Brianna Doyle (James), Shane Gregory; JoAnna Vincent (fiancé Andrew Cordell), Cary Thomas, Kelly Thomas; Elisha Spears (Robert), Bethany MacDonald, Arden MacDonald; Michael MacDonald, Monica MacDonald, Lily MacDonald, Rory MacDonald; Melissa MacDonald (Dean Burns), Brittany MacDonald, Christopher MacDonald, Gabriella Arellano, Bruno Arellano, Carlos Arellano; Amberose Kramer, Douglas Kramer; Brett MacDonald, Alexander MacDonald, Corey MacDonald; Eli MacDonald, and Ian Wojcik; and great-grandchildren: Rehkin Fanning, Myles Fish, Liam Fish; Aidan Farley, Branson Farley, Kalvin Scoon, Cameron Scoon, Caleb Scoon, Kennedy Slaasted, Delaney Slaasted, Aria Naughton (Scoon); Samuel MacDonald; Jack MacDonald, Madelyn MacDonald; Finley Gregory, Quinn Bray, Eleanor Bray, Hudson Bray; Connar Spears; and Kiley Burns.

Hugh attended Catholic Central High School in Detroit, Michigan, the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and Gateway Technical College in Racine, Wisconsin. He proudly served his country in the Michigan National Guard and the United States Air Force. Hugh began working for SC Johnson Wax in their Detroit warehouse in 1959. In 1972, he was transferred to Racine, Wisconsin, retiring as a product maker in 1983. 

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where he sang for many years in the church choir, the SC Johnson Wax 20-year club, and the American Legion. Hugh loved spending time with his family camping, swimming, gardening, dancing, playing all kinds of games and sharing family stories.

He is survived by one sister, Elsie Drouin; sister-in-law, Shirley MacDonald; and brothers-in-law, Rudy Kuzma and William Schmitt. He was preceded in death by his son, Hugh Michael; his parents, Margaret Belle and Wilfred MacDonald; siblings, Mary Jane McDonald, Leonard MacDonald, Hazel Bourassa, Rita Kuzma, Barbara Schmitt and Mary Josephine MacDonald; and brothers-in-law, Lionel McDonald, John Bourassa and Larry Drouin. He also touched the lives of many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Spring Street, on Monday, January 6, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Terrance J. Huebner officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Sunday at the funeral home from noon until 3 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 9 a.m., until the time of Mass at 10:30 a.m. Memorials to St. Catherine’s High School (www.saintcats.org ), Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (www.chw.org ), or St. Jude’s Hospital (www.stjude.org) have been suggested.
