Wally was employed as a Stereotyper at the Milwaukee Sentinel, Milwaukee Journal and the Racine Journal Times.  He was very community minded and joined the Tuesday Optimist Club in 1972 and served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Friday Optimists for over 40 years.  He also served on the board of the Racine Raiders, was a volunteer for Toys for Tots and was a member of the Moose Club.  He worked at the Cesar Chavez Center, formerly Douglas Park, for almost 30 years, coaching basketball, helping senior citizens groups, supervising in the Pool Room and elsewhere amongst many other duties.  Wally worked with generations of children, all of whom loved and respected him.

An avid music fan, Wally played trumpet in a band in his early years and also marched with the Boys of 76 Drum and Bugle Corps.  He never missed an opportunity to hear live music and the Big Bands were his favorites.  Whenever he walked into a room with a familiar band or group playing they would automatically play “All of Me,” his all-time favorite song. Wally was a volunteer with the Animal Crackers Concert Series from its inception, bringing the food for the performers before the shows.  He never missed a concert until this past summer.  He was inducted into the Animal Crackers Hall of Fame.  Above all, Wally was a devoted father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Dr. Tony Larsen officiating.  Private interment with full military honors will be held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.

The Fourth of July was Wally’s favorite holiday.  He never missed a parade and always held a picnic afterward on his backyard deck. A celebration of his life will take place on July 6, 2013, at 2 p.m. at The Yardarm where he spent many an evening among friends listening to music. There will be a reminder announcement in the paper in June.  Memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Ethel Mae Greene

Ethel Mae Greene, age 88, passed away on December 12, 2012, at her residence. A lifelong Racine resident, she was born October 17, 1924, daughter of the late George H. and Bertha M. (Nee: Gerlat) Greene.

Ethel began working at Western Printing (later to become Western Publishing) in 1943. As a telephone operator and receptionist, her warm greetings welcomed customers and visitors to the company for forty-four years until her retirement in 1990. She knew most employees and many of the customers by voice. When Ethel retired from Western, her party brought a huge gathering of friends, eager to share their memories with her. It was decided then that there should be an annual celebration to bring Westerners together. Ethel served on the committee, to make it happen, and the Western luncheon/dinner has become a June tradition.

She was a longtime dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, where she was the organist for many years. She was also a life member of the Eastern Star, member of Friends of Seniors and Elbow Bender Club. Ethel was a talented pianist and organist. When Western organized a men’s chorus, she was asked to be their accompanist. They sang for many local events, including a special performance at the Milwaukee County Stadium. It was the only time, Ethel recalled, that she played the piano in the middle of a grassy field!

In addition to her choral work, she accompanied many soloists, played for hundreds of weddings and memorial services. She enjoyed traveling with her sister and many friends. Ethel will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her cousin, Elizabeth Gerlat of California; other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Greene; cousins, Ellen Mae Iverson and David Gerlat.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 745 Main St., with Rev. Brad Van Fossen officiating. Florence 'Mickey' E. (Schorle) Grey

Florence E. Grey, “Mickey,” age 89, passed away Monday, Dec 3, 2012, at Wheaton Franciscan All Saints Medical Center.  She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 28, 1923, the first of  three children of the late Albert and Gladys (Nee: Conrad) Schorle.

As a young girl, her father’s job brought the family to Toronto, Canada.  Mickey took an early interest in music and learned to play the trumpet.    In 1948 she toured with Virgil Whyte’s All Girl Band.  Later she settled down in Washington, D.C., and worked for the U.S. Department of the Treasury.  During this time she also taught herself the bass and played and sang in a girls trio.   After three years she returned home to Toronto. Saxophonist Norbert Gosieski knew Mickey back in 1947 while she was working at a Racine factory office.  When he was discharged as a U.S. Army Bandsman in 1953 he called Toronto and asked her to join his quartet to tour professionally.

On August 6, 1955, in Traverse City, MI, they were united in marriage.  Mickey and Norby played with their quartet for many years while at the same time running the family business, Gosieski Music, from 1956 until their retirement in 1999.  Mickey was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Norby; her daughter, Noreen (Nate) Lienhard of Wayne, NJ; granddaughter, Karlyn  Lienhard;  brothers, Albert (Jean) Schorle, Donald Schorle of Canada; other relatives and dear friends.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Mike; sister-in-law, Trudy Whyte; brothers-in-law, George Gosieski and Chester Goss.

Private services will be held.

Being an avid Mickey Rooney fan as a child, she adopted the nickname “Mickey,” which stuck for the rest of her life.
