Ruth Ernestine Carolyn Gitzel

Milwaukee -- Ruth Ernestine Carolyn Gitzel, age 93, died peacefully on April 28, 2013.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of Milwaukee and an active member of her community.  She was generous, loving, patient, talented and creative. She found joy in playing the piano and gave piano lessons to many of her squirmy nieces and nephews, whom she loved and who loved her right back.  She also took them to plays, concerts and museums.  In later life she took up painting, and many of her paintings now grace the homes of her nieces, nephews and sister.

She served in her church as Sunday school teacher and deacon, and she served in the community by tutoring math in several middle schools, putting to use her math degree from Milwaukee-Downer College. She enjoyed the beauty of flowers, gardens and the outdoors, and frequently walked, skated and cross-country skied in Whitnall Park, which she loved.

Her work provided her another creative outlet. Ruth spent many years in the field of home furnishing, culminating with the opening of her own store, Lamps Etc., in Brookfield in 1983.

Ruth is survived by her sister Carol (Robert) Anderson. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Marion (Walter) Schmidt and Dorothea (Eldon) Smithback.  She is missed by her family, her friends and her community.

Dorothy Bloom Creecy

Dorothy Bloom Creecy died at her home in Racine, Wisconsin, at the age of 92, after a long illness.

Throughout her life she was known for her interest in the arts and in literature. She was a fine-arts major at Washington University in St. Louis, but was persuaded to leave without finishing her degree by her ardent young suitor, John Creecy, then a newspaperman on the St. Louis Star. His career led the couple to the Detroit area, where their children, Tom and Catherine (Katie), were born.

Mrs. Creecy's interest in the arts, especially in Asian art, unusual for its time, expressed itself in the striking way she decorated her home, and in her large, beautiful garden, while her voracious reading made her, with her husband, a steadfast patron, supporter and eventual board member of the fledgling Southfield Public Library, now a large and flourishing institution. Perhaps the most important example of her work for this library was her longtime leadership of a popular reading and discussion group for seniors; they discussed authors ranging from Christopher Isherwood to Henry James.

In 2003, Mrs. Creecy moved to Racine, Wisconsin, to be closer to her son Tom and his family and to enjoy the beautiful lakeside city. She made abundant use of the excellent library facilities, enjoyed participating in a book club there, loved to visit the Racine Art Museum, and quickly adapted her talent for gardening to a new environment and climate. Her vivacious, witty and original personality will make her very much missed by her friends and by her family who mourn her.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Creecy; by her son, Tom Creecy of Racine; by her brother, Martin Bloom; and by her grandson and granddaughter, John and Rebecca Creecy.

Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Friday, April 12, 2013, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southfield Public Library, 26300 Evergreen Road, Southfield, Michigan, 48076; or to the Racine Art Museum, 441 Main Street, Racine, WI, 53403.

She was a proud graduate of UW-Milwaukee. On May 18, 1963, Sonia was united in marriage to the love of her life, Sarkis Buchaklian, and since then shared fifty beautiful years together.  She was a dedicated member of St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church and the ladies auxiliary. An excellent cook, Sonia will be forever remembered as one of the editors of the church cookbook that was full of authentic Armenian recipes and stories from the Charter Mothers. Sonia’s greatest passion was for her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored.  She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her loving husband, Sarkis; children, Peter (Brenda) Buchaklian, Catherine (Mark) Litton, John (Melanie) Buchaklian; eight grandchildren, Coral, Sarkis, Kevork, Aram, Arev, Siroun, Haig and Nicolas Nishan; sister, Mary (Berj) Djibilian; brother-in-law,  sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.   In addition to her parents, Sonia was preceded in death by her daughter, Ani Lucine; and three brothers, Harry, Augie and Milton.

Funeral services will be held at St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church, 4100 Newman Rd., on Monday April 8, 2013, at 10 a.m., with Rev Daron Stepanian officiating.  Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Sunday at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until 5  p.m. (4 p.m. prayer service).  Memorials to St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church, 4100 Newman Rd., Racine, WI 53406 have been suggested.

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Michael Mullane and his staff and to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Hospice for all of their loving and compassionate care.
