Cheyenne J. (Thompson) Buss

On Friday, May 27, 2011, just three months, nineteen days and five hours after the passing of “the love of her life,” Cheyenne June Buss took her last breath, surrounded by her family in the red house on Spring Street that her husband built.

Born in Shawano, Wisconsin, on June 16, 1929, at the height of the depression, to Robert and Hildegard Thompson, their first-born daughter understood the true meaning of hard work and dedication. Over the years, many people would ask Cheyenne how she got her unique name. She cherished telling the story how her father, Robert, was a rodeo rider out West and his favorite city was Cheyenne. When he met and married Hildegard he had insisted that she name their first-born child (no matter the gender), after the city of Cheyenne. So began the story of “OUR” Cheyenne.

Times were difficult. The Thompson family had now grown by the birth of son Bobby. They did their best by traveling west through the dust bowls to California, only to find that Wisconsin was where their heart and future lie and settled in Appleton. The Thompson clan grew by two more. Cheyenne now had a loving sister, Shirlee, and a younger kid brother, Jimmy. Working hard all winter, springtime brought the family back to the Bodart Shows for the carnival season. Cheyenne, a third generation “carnie,” was lulled to sleep on the Ferris wheel. As she grew into a strong-willed, hardworking young woman, her father gave her her own “joint,” a pitch 'til you win game, with all profits going into the family fund. Little did she know that in 1947, while she was hard at work hauling her own tent at each stop, there was a handsome red-haired man watching her every move.

It was in Shawano that Robert “Red” Buss joined the Bodart Shows and after a short, but sweet courtship they were married on April 17, 1948, in Appleton. It was with the birth of their daughter, Kay Mary, that Dad Thompson decided it was time to stop traveling with the carnival and the trailer court and grocery store was bought. Two years later, in 1950, Bob, Cheyenne and Kay Mary came to Racine to seek their own future.

Working side-by-side with their daughter on an army cot, Cheyenne knew how to swing a hammer and plumb a wall. The first house they built on Ohio, which is still standing, was the start of R. J. Buss Builders. With Bob as president and Cheyenne as Vice-President/Secretary this team would build both residential and commercial properties throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Cheyenne would never admit to it, but both her daughters, Kay and Eva, believe that their mother was ahead of her time as the “working Mom” at home where both Cheyenne and Bob had their offices.

With each achievement that Bob made -- both in the building industry and in philanthropic organizations like the Kiwanis -- if Bob was making the speech, Cheyenne had written it, and if Bob was flipping pancakes at Pancake Day, Cheyenne was pouring coffee. She was his ‘Cherokee,’ the one who supported her husband’s business endeavors, hunted with him out west and went on goose hunts in the Horicon all together with their daughter Eva Linn in the motor home.

Cheyenne also had her own personal achievements. In the mid '50s and '60s her name would appear in the Journal Times as a top kegler at J & W Lanes on Main Street, Douglas Bowl and with the Shoop Park Ladies. She tried golf, and told the family of her hole-in-one at Johnson’s, the only reason there wasn’t two is because she hung up her clubs because there were homes to be built while the weather was good. Her daughters will always remember their trips to Broadway musicals and the latest musical movie releases.

Along with hunting, Bob and Cheyenne enjoyed building and spending time at their cottage on Anderson Lake. Their motor home trips together with family members including the Kruegers and the Ferrons. Cheyenne always spoke about their motor home trip to Manitoba traveling to the family home of Dr. and Mrs. Lou Floch. Business friends soon became personal friends; Jack and Eileen Rogan are just one example, creating uncountable memories in Mexico and Vegas.

But with all their business successes and list of friends, it was family that always came first. It was always breakfast with their daughters, and dinner was always held until Daddy walked in the door. Their one and only granddaughter, “our little love” Tiffany, who remembers faking sick from school to stay at Grandma and Grandpa’s was then the one in the end who stayed by their sides as their own personal nurse. Cheyenne’s true joy for the past 16 years was having her own “commune” on Spring Street with Tiffany, Josh, Logan and Peyton as their steadfast neighbors and daily dose of love.

She also cherished living vicariously by watching her lovely, red-haired and talented great-granddaughter Peyton dance for the past nine years. You could find her most weekends as the loudest cheerleader at numerous soccer games of curly-haired Logan and Peyton’s over the years. The many visits to their home away from home at Eva’s in Green Bay will always be cherished. Kay has always credited her mom for her love of husband and family, and the business savvy to succeed. Cheyenne taught the four girls in her life the importance of the unconditional love of family and friends. She is the woman who longed to be with her husband, but didn’t stop until her work here was done.

Cheyenne has now joined her husband of 62 earthly years, R.J. She leaves behind her two daughters to carry on all the learned traditions, Kay (Paul) Dawson and Eva Buss. Her next-door neighbors and loving granddaughter, Tiffany (Tiffer), her “grandson” Joshua, (Josher) Baumstark and much-loved great-grandchildren, Logan and Peyton. Known as Toots to her sister Shirlee (Michael) Driskel, and baby brother Jimmy Thompson. Cheyenne was preceded in death by her husband Robert J. Buss, brother Robert Thompson and sister Mae Krueger. She will be sadly missed by her Buss sisters and brother and of course, the “outlaw” brothers and sister in-laws. Aunt Cheyenne leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Special heartfelt thanks to Pat and Debbie Dashnier of Green Bay for putting your life on hold to join your second family as we eased our loved one to eternal life. And last, but not least; their friends that she and Bob treasured throughout the years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 4, 2011, at 10 a.m., at Christ The King Lutheran Church, 3350 LaSalle St. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Friday, June 3, 2011, at the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m and Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice Alliance.

The family wishes to express deepest, heartfelt thanks to the entire team of Hospice Alliance, and the spiritual guidance of Pastor H. Kamps and Pastor Gary Ruckman. For truly caring, the family thanks Dr. Michael Mullane. Cheyenne’s final journey would never have been same without each of you.

James 'Jim' F. DiMarco

James “Jim” Frederick DiMarco, age 75, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011, at the Golden Living Center, Glendale, WI. Jim died peacefully after years of coping with Alzheimer’s disease.

Jim was born in Cloquet, MN, December 4, 1935, only child of the late Leo A. and Lillian (Nee: Wall) DiMarco. He and his parents lived briefly in St. Paul, MN. They then settled in Superior, Wisconsin, where Jim attended the University LAB School, then went to Superior Central High School, graduating in 1954. Furthering his education, Jim attended the Institute of Technology, School of Chemical Engineering, at the University of Minnesota from 1954 – 1959.

On June 20, 1959, he was united in marriage in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Janet F. (Nee: Jordan). They met during freshman orientation week at the University of Minnesota, remained friends over the years, and were wed one week after his graduation from the College of Chemical Engineering, B.S.

They moved to his hometown, Superior, WI, where Jim had accepted a position as Process Engineer for Murphy Oil Refinery, where he had interned two previous summers. He worked there until September 1962, while also completing his eight-year military commitment as a radar technician in the Air Force National Guard/Duluth AFBase in June 1962  with the rank of staff sergeant.

In October 1962 he returned to the University of Minnesota to earn his Master's degree in the Carlson School of Business. In one year he took the maximum number of courses while working half-time and supporting a family of five. He graduated with honors in May 1964.

Jim accepted a position at S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. in Racine, WI. He was hired as a Manufacturing Process Engineer in September 1963. He held many positions within the company, retiring as Senior Vice President Worldwide Consumer Products – Research, Development and Engineering in 1998 after 34+ years of service.

Among Jim’s greatest joys was helping Waxdale create their first automatic batching system. Another was being part of the team that built SCJ’s first computer, which occupied a complete building. He found the complexities of working with Communist countries challenging and educational, and was part of setting up a Johnson Company in China. He made friends wherever he traveled, and was highly respected by those who knew him.

Jim was affiliated with professional groups. He was a past president of the Wisconsin branch of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, a member of the International Economic Council, the Industrial Research Institute, The Wisconsin Association of Research Management, and the Strategic Planning Institute.

In the community he was one of the founders and past president and chairman of the Racine Economic Development Corporation, a member of the Racine County Air Pollution Control Board, helped CATI in their early days by connecting people with new skills with companies who agreed to hire them. He was actively involved in testing our local beaches and rivers and uncovering sources of pollution.

Jim was a lifelong learner and teacher. He was an avid reader, historian, tennis player, walker, loyal family man and friend. Jim also enjoyed classical music, live theater, and traveling. As his dementia increased, many loyal friends stood by him and visited him at home and at his care facilities. His family will be forever grateful to them, as well as those who stood by his family as his disease progressed. The staff at the Golden Living Center was loving and professional. Thank you all.

Jim leaves to mourn his loss: his wife, Janet; their children, Angela (John) Bylancik of Verona, NJ, Vivian (Chris) Nelson of Brookfield, WI, Steve (Margaret) DiMarco of Chanhassen, MN; his grandchildren, Mark and Kristina Bylancik, Jenny and Steve Nelson, Dan and Laura DiMarco, the Seattle DiMarcos and the Ehlert family in Michigan.

There will be no public visitation or service. Jim’s family would be most grateful to those who are willing to share memories of him through contacting them at jfdim2@aol.com.

Jim’s favorite place to walk was the Racine Zoo. That was a reason he thought Racine would be a good place to live. Four generations of DiMarcos have now enjoyed it. He wanted our family to memorialize him through donations to the Racine Zoological Society, that everyone in the community could share his joy. We’re thinking possibly electric scooters or wheelchairs to enable the handicapped to see Racine’s little piece of paradise. We invite those so inclined to join us in this ambitious endeavor.

“Jim’s spirit will always be with us.”

Emil J. Pavlik

With his loving family by his side, Emil J. Pavlik, age 91, passed away peacefully Sunday morning May 15, 2011, at the Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center, Emergency Room, after struggling with numerous illnesses in the last few years. He fought his way back to health each time --- he would do anything for a prime rib dinner at the Corner House! Emil was born on August 22, 1919, in Chicago, IL, the only son and the youngest child of Stefan F. Pavlik and Elizabeth “Betka” (nee: Sabol) Pavlik. He was a proud first generation son of an immigrant family from Prague, Czechoslovakia.

After leaving Chicago, the family moved to Ottawa, IL, where Emil had many happy schoolhood memories and stories of his beloved dog Dickie. They migrated to Racine in the late 1920s with his father opening a tavern, Steve's Place, at the corner of 21st and Mead Streets. It was in that neighborhood that he lost his desire to pitch for the Yankees (he once pitched a no-hitter with the Lakeside League), to pursue this love he found in music. He found he could get two cornet lessons on a horn he got from his Uncle John, in return for six of his mother's kolaches. And the teacher even threw in a spaghetti dinner. Anyone knowing Emil knew of his love for pasta, especially spaghetti with homemade Italian sausage.

He graduated from Park High School. He studied music at USAFI, the University of Hawaii, Chicago College of Music, the Midwestern Conservatory of Music, and the Metropolitan School of Music. During World War II, Emil proudly served as Corporal in the United States Army stationed in Pearl Harbor, and played in the 297th Coast Artillery Band. Throughout his life, he continued his pursuit and love for music. He learned from one teacher, who gave him lessons for free, that there was no need for payment. Just pass the knowledge along to the next person -- a philosophy he never forgot.

On September 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Beverly Nelson, who preceded him in death on Easter Sunday 1998. To this union were born two children, Barbara and Stefan. Emil was employed by Morris Letter Service for over forty years and retired to spend more time with his ill wife. He always said he never retired, he was just “between gigs.”

An accomplished musician, Emil studied the Schillinger System of Music at several Chicago Conservatories, along with conducting. Emil’s love of music and enthusiastic talent was showcased by playing trumpet and arranging music for the 297th A.G.F. Band in the Hawaiian Islands and Tinian, Mariannas. He played with Skinnay Ennis from L.A. and Frankie Masters from Chicago and his best Army buddy was the noted tenor sax man Sam Donahue.

Emil was a fifty-plus member of the Musicians Union #42, and also the proud recipient of the 1987 Racine Musicians Association Award “Excellence in Music.” He was the arranger and a trumpet player with the Freddie Mann band, then with John Bunic Band for over thirty years, and a member of the Wes Adrian Avant Garde Group. There were countless other gigs along the way.

He served as musical director and arranger for the Racine Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps from 1949 - 1970. Under his musical direction and with his radical jazz arrangements, the Kilties garnered three VFW National Championships:  '64, ’65 and ’69. The Kilties’ reputation skyrocketed, and fans eagerly awaited what Emil had up his sleeve for the next season. He always humbly said that it was not him who led them to the championships, it was the corps themselves who marched on the field, as he only stood on the sidelines. Emil’s iconic arrangement of “Auld Lang Syne” has been nationally recognized in the drum corps community since 1960.

Emil directed J.I. Case and Western Publishing Company choruses, and various church choirs. He directed the pit band for the Kiltie Kapers, which originated in the early '50s, and directed several Miss Racine Shows. In 1970, Emil was the musical director oif the first Cardiac Capers. Many of the young performers he mentored back then are still performing locally with the Penguin Players.

On July 4, 2004, he was the first Inductee and Charter Member of the Kiltie Hall of Fame. Even a bigger honor: he was nominated by numerous colleagues and inducted into the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame in August 2009, the same month he turned 90 years old. He made the trip to Indianapolis and received this coveted award before tens of thousands of fans. He was known and loved by all who craved to get a picture taken with him or share how his style of arranging had changed their musical ways. At his induction, he gave a phenomenal "off the cuff" speech which had the crowd begging for more. Back in Racine, he celebrated his 90th birthday with over a hundred friends and fellow musicians. Mayor John Dickert was on hand to read a proclamation naming his birthday "Emil Pavlik Day in Racine."

Over the years, many people he worked with shared stories of his caring personality, his ability to reach youth that others could not, and how he never went back on his word. The same can be said of his life as a father and grandfather. He was always there, until the very end.

It is joyous to say that just one month prior to his departure from this world, he was able to attend the Penguin Players show. He was so happy to see so many of the singers and dancers that he worked with for over 60 years, and to see his grandson, Nick, in the cast carrying on the Pavlik tradition.

One of the greatest highlights in the past few years (as if there weren’t enough) was to see his beloved New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl. That was the topping on the cake. He was never one to wear a baseball cap, but from that day forward, he could always be found with one of his Saints caps on, usually the Championship one. He had developed personal relationships with some of the players over the years, and had the pictures and autographs to prove it.

Emil was a loving and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be deeply missed by his daughter, Barbara (Mark) Riegelman, and their children, Anthony (Kelley) Cooper, and their children, Kaya and Cole Emil; Aeri (Scott) Hetland, and their children, Bailey and Peyton; Nicholas and Charlie Riegelman, all of Racine. He will also be missed by his son Stefan (Elizabeth) Pavlik, and their children, Melissa of Minneapolis, MN, and Aimee of Racine. We will never forget the hikes to Petrifying Springs, snagging golf balls in the woods, the numerous practical jokes we played on each other, or his official visits to Paul's office on Wednesday nights. We also will never forget the tremendous pride he found in all of us, and didn't mind sharing with others. He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Sharon Johnson; and a host of other relatives, and friends too numerous to name. Special friends, Ken Norman, Jr., Tom Meredith, Jr., both of Racine, and Stuart Faber of Los Angeles, also survive him.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Marge Krueger and Irene Timko; and sisters-in-law, Lorraine Hansen, and Richard Nelson.

A celebration of Emil’s life will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Heather Bumstead and The Rev. Robert Bagley, Deacon, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Emil had one wish for all when his time came: to put on a genuine smile and do a good deed for one in need, selflessly. In his memory memorials to the Health Care Network, 904 State St., Racine, WI 53404 or to the Racine Kilties, P.O. Box 085235, Racine, WI 53408 have been suggested.

The family would also like to graciously thank all of Emil's friends for their support, comfort and prayers over the last few years. You will never know how deeply it was appreciated. We would also like to thank Dr. Sarah Silver, MD, and Rachel Cortez, RN, for their kind and caring compassion shown during dad's last hours.
