Robert J. Chapek, 80 passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints on Friday, April 9, 2010.
Robert Jerome was born in Racine to the late Harold and Eunice (nee: Kelley) Chapek on January 14, 1930, and lived in Racine for most of his life. In Racine, he was united in marriage to Nancy Ruppel on June 1, 1963.
Mr. Chapek was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on the church senior choir. He was proud to serve his country in the United States Navy from 1948 until 1952 as a Boatswain Mate 3rd Class on the USS Midway. Mr. Chapek was employed by Modine Manufacturing Company for 15 years, Piggly Wiggly for 11 years and Harbor Light Yacht Club for 22 years. He retired on January 30, 2004. He was member of the VFW Post 10301 and the VFW Firing Squad for seven years. He enjoyed sea exploring from 1979 until 1982.
Robert is survived by his wife, Nancy; two children, Bryan Chapek and Pamela (Joseph) Sorenson; one granddaughter, Britney Simanek; one sister, Janet Barr; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Wes Barr.
A funeral ceremony will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1501 Erie Street, on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Daniel B. Quinn officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the Wilson Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday morning at the church from 10 a.m, until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
