Lillian Hansen, 92, died on the morning of December 22, 2010, at Becker-Shoop Center. A lifelong resident of Racine, Lillian had lived since 2007 at Walnut Grove Assisted Living, having moved there from the Danish-American Home.
Lillian was born on July 10, 1918, to Jens and Marie (nee Jensen) Hansen, both of whom were Danish immigrants and members of State Street Danish Baptist Church. Lillian graduated from Washington Park High School in 1937 and later became a Licensed Practical Nurse through St. Luke's School of Nursing. During WWII, she volunteered to help care for wounded soldiers at St. Mary's Hospital. For 43 years Lillian worked in book handling and as a nurse in the infirmary at Western Publishing Company, retiring in 1980.
A lifelong member of Fellowship (formerly Grove Avenue) Baptist Church, Lillian sang in the choir and was a faithful visitor of the hospitalized and home-bound. She was a lover of cats and an amateur artist who for decades met regularly with fellow artists to paint pictures of cats and flowers on dishes and vases. Lillian enjoyed traveling around the U.S. (having visited all states except Alaska) and twice visited Denmark.
Lillian is survived by her niece, Julie Sego of Sturtevant along with Julie's son, Eric and daughter, Kristi; and by her nephew, Ron Damholt of Grapevine, Texas, along with Ron's son, Kristian and daughter, Alisa; as well as other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Irving; sisters, Edith Damholt and Evelyn Hansen; aunts, Anna and Olga Jensen; and cousins, Earl and Daniel Jensen. Lillian was deeply loved by many, and will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be at Wilson Funeral Home, 1212 Lathrop Ave., on Wednesday, January 5, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Friends are invited to greet the family beginning at 9:30.
