Richard R. Schaffer

Richard R. Schaffer, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, MN.  Richard was born in Racine, June 17, 1939, son of the late Roy W. and Elva (Nee:  Umland) Schaffer and was a lifelong resident of Racine.

Richard was a graduate of Washington Park High School “Class of 1957.”  Furthering his education, he graduated from UW School of Pharmacy in 1961.  On June 10, 1961, in DeForest, WI, he was united in marriage to JoAnn L. Johnson.  Richard was employed by Red Cross Drug Store for thirteen years and owned and operated Schaffer Pharmacy for seventeen years. He was a lifelong active member and trustee of Plymouth Congregational Church.  He was also a member and past president of the Pharmacy Association of Racine and served on the Mt. Pleasant Planning Commission for eighteen years.  An avid reader, he also enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.  More than anything, he cherished time with his family and will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his loving wife, JoAnn; his children, Laura (Jim) Bauman of Hong Kong, Paul (Pam) Schaffer of Knoxville, TN; his grandchildren, Drew, Tom and Kira Bauman, Jackson, Madison and Jonathan Schaffer; sister, Marian Widmoyer of Plainfield, IL; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Helen Knuteson of Madison, Andrew (JoAnn) Johnson of McDonough, GA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim Widmoyer, Elna (Duane) Lothe, Ruth (Hubert) Tuggle and Myrlen Knuteson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1143 College Ave., with Rev. Glenn Lawson officiating.  Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park.  Relatives and friends may meet with the family Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m.  Memorials to the Plymouth Congregational Church or to the Gift of Life Transplant House, 705 Second Street SW, Rochester, MN 55902 have been suggested.
