Mary (Voorlas) Maragos

Mary Maragos (nee: Voorlas), age 97, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at the Becker-Shoop Center.   Mary was born in Racine on July 5, 1916, daughter of the late Aristidis and Sophie Voorlas and was a lifelong resident of Racine.

Mary was a graduate of Washington Park High School “Class of 1934.” On June 14, 1942, she was united in marriage to Ernest N. Maragos, who preceded her in death on May 1, 2002.  She was a longtime and active member of Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church and the Ladies Philoptochos Society.  In her early years she was employed as a beautician, and after raising her two sons she worked at Truesdell Furs for several years.  An artist at heart, she enjoyed painting miniature acrylic masterpieces.  She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her sons, Dr. Nicolas E. (Constance) Maragos of Rochester, MN, Charles E. (Sheila) Maragos of Racine; her five grandchildren, Anastasia Maragos (fiancé, Richard Uytdewilligen), John Maragos, Mariya Maragos, Marianne (Jeff) Balousek, Melissa (Troy) Christenson; her three great-grandchildren, Eleni and Melina Balousek, and Wyatt Christenson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Peter and Gust; and sisters, Ann Cooper and Faye Kappas.

Relatives and friends may meet with the family Thursday at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 7 p.m.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 13, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 1335 S. Green Bay Road, Hwy 31, with Rev. John Ketchum officiating.  Entombment will follow at Graceland Cemetery.  Memorials to Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church have been suggested.
