Ruth (Alk) Hulbert

Ruth Hulbert (nee: Alk), passed away on September 28, 2014, in Eden Prairie, MN, a recent transplant from Racine, Wisconsin. Ruth was born in Green Bay on January 3, 1919, daughter of the late Sarah (nee: Jacobs) and Lazarus Alk.

In March of 1939 she married David Hulbert, who preceded her in death after 63 wonderful years of marriage. She was a long-time member of the Beth Israel Sinai Congregation (Racine, WI) where she was past-president of the Sisterhood and worked on behalf of the congregation in many roles.

She worked for the children’s department of the Racine Public Library for 20 years. She loved solving crossword puzzles, playing cards and was an avid reader.  She was a life-long Packer fan, in part because members of her family were integral to the creation of the team.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters: Sam, Ben, Abe, Lew and Isadore Alk, Jean Biller and Esther Kaplan, and her son-in-law, Ed Johnson.

She was a loving wife, parent, grandparent and great-grandparent. Survivors include her daughters, Benita Johnson of Lakeway, TX, Linda Hulbert, (Kent Rissman) of Edina MN; grandson, Elliot Hulbert Johnson (Lisa Chronister); grandchildren Adena Rissman (Carey Callies), Lilia Rissman and Joshua Rissman (Amy Cohen); great-grandsons, Zeke Aviv Rissman-Callies and Charles Aaron Cohen Rissman, sister-in-law, Gertrude Hulbert; nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition, she will be missed by the many friends she gathered in her 95 years.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2014, at 11 a.m.  at the Beth Israel Sinai Temple, 944 Main St., Racine, WI, 53403 with Rabbi Martyn Adelberg officiating.  Interment will follow at the Racine Jewish Memorial Cemetery. Shiva will be held at  the Colony of Eden Prairie, 431 Prairie Center Drive, on Sunday, October 5 at 7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Beth Israel Sinai Temple are appreciated or a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Colony of Eden Prairie and the Methodist Hospice staff for their kind and loving attention.
