John “Jack” C. Wemmert, age 87, passed away Monday, May 31, 2010, at Ridgewood Care Center. Jack was born in Racine, August 5, 1922, son of the late Edward and Amanda (Nee: Hochgurtel) Wemmert and was a lifelong resident of Racine.
He graduated from St. Catherine’s High School. During World War II Jack proudly served in the United States Air Force 448th Bomber Group as Staff Sergeant Nose Gunner. On November 27, 1945, he was united in marriage to Ione E. Kosterman. In his younger years he was employed with Smitty’s Radio Service, then with Rae Motors, McHenry, IL, designing small electric motors for eleven years, and retired from Mamco Corporation as an electrical engineer.
Jack was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. As a social person Jack enjoyed his fishing trips with the guys and volunteering at the Sheriff’s Department. A very capable and handy person, Jack became known as “Mr. Fixit.” Jack was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who cherished time spent with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-four years, Ione; his children, John (Julie) Wemmert Jr. of Mesa, AZ, Gary (Sue) Wemmert of Pewaukee, Susan (Rich) Svatora of Midland, MI; his grandchildren, Denise Wemmert, Christian Wemmert, Jill (Phillip) Numrich, Summer (Jimmy) Militello, Abilene (Walter) Smith; his step-grandchildren, Tony, Joe and Henry Silva; his great-grandchildren, Emilie Numrich, Chayton McCoy Smith, Hanna Militello, Abriel Smith, Eden Smith; brothers, Robert (Carolyn) Wemmert, James (Joan) Wemmert; sister, Dorothy Schieble; sister-in-law, Margaret Wemmert; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Mildred Floyd, Verna Petersen; and brother, Edward Wemmert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., with Rev. Richard J. Molter officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Saturday at the church from 9:15 a.m. until time of Mass at 10:30 a.m.
