Sister Vera Bares, O.P., 87, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine, on Tuesday May 25, 2010.
Genevieve Elizabeth Bares was born December 15, 1922, to John and Catherine (nee: Schecher) Bares in Dacada, Wisconsin. On September 9, 1942, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1943 she was given the religious name Sister Vera. She professed her first vows in 1946 and her final vows in 1952.
Sister Vera spent many years in service to others in teaching. She began her ministry in 1944 at Sacred Heart, Racine. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Mary, Janesville; St. John, South Milwaukee; St. Luke, Plain; St. Mary and St. Thomas, Kenosha; St. Louis, Caledonia; St. Joseph, Racine; St. Charles, Burlington; and St. Mary, Pewaukee. While working at St. Elizabeth/St. Gall, Milwaukee as a pastoral minister she founded the Adult Learning Center. She also served in Michigan. After moving to Siena Center, Racine, in 1981 she continued to serve others through Jail Ministry and in the Adult Learning Program. In August 2009 she became a resident at Lakeshore Manor, Racine.
Sister Vera is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; a niece and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Leonard; and sister, Marie C. Bares; and infant siblings Albert, Hugo, Stanislaus and Dolores.
Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Saturday May 29, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.
