Mary Alyce (Phillips) Hansen passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Golden Living Center, Lansing, KS. Mary loved life and people. Her kindness of heart, willingness to listen and encouragement made her a special person to many. Her quick wit and warm smile will be missed by all that knew and loved her. May she live on in each of our hearts.
Mary was born on June 17, 1931, in Racine, daughter of George and Edna (Vorpahl) Phillips. She married Kenneth L. Hansen on February 3, 1951, in Racine. She lived and worked in Racine the majority of her life.
Mary came to Leavenworth in 1989 to be with her daughter and family. She is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Ladies Aid. Mary touched many lives throughout her life with her passion for food, knowledge and talent of crafts, love of collecting cookbooks and recipes, and her contributions to the community.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Ken, September 27, 1965; her parents; brothers, William and John Phillips; and sister, Lois Mae Phillips. She is survived by her loving daughters, Elizabeth Burris (Timothy) of Spokane, WA, and Laura Elkins (Jerry) of Leavenworth, KS; sisters, Grace DuPree of Glendale Heights, IL, and Kathryn Lindh of Ft. Atkinson, WI; grandsons, Ronald Elkins, Kenneth Elkins, Carl Burris, Joshua Burris and Loren Elkins; great-granddaughters, Fiona, Addison and Delanie Burris; great-grandsons, Cameron, Chase and Corbin Elkins and Seth Burris; cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Services will be at the Sturino Funeral Home on Friday, May 14, 2010, at 1 p.m. with a visitation from noon until service time. Internment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations to be given to the St. Paul Lutheran School, 311 N. Seventh St., Leavenworth, KS, 66048 or Crossroads Hospice, 9237 Ward Parkway, Ste. 300, Kansas City, MO, 64114.
