Don P. Baumblatt, M.D.
Don Phillip Baumblatt, MD, 77, passed away on May 24, 2010, surrounded by his family at All Saints Hospital in Racine. He was born in Racine on Feb. 11, 1933, son of the late Leonard P. and Ruth P. (nee: Levy) Baumblatt.
As he told his kids a hundred times, he knew he wanted to be a physician ever since he was a boy. So after graduating from Horlick in '51, he earned his BA and MD at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, did his internship at Philadelphia General, and his residency at Baylor. He also served as a Captain and physician in the Air Force in the Azores for two yrs. He had a private practice in Racine, where he was known as an expert diagnostician and for making his patients laugh with good humor and bad puns.
In 1965 he met his other great love: Geraldine W. Mattie, a nurse who served in the Peace Corps in Bolivia. After just two weeks, he was smitten and proposed. They were married on Jan. 2, 1966. From then on they were seldom apart. He loved spending time with his family, being out in his yard. He swam a mile most every day. He also loved the arts: opera, ballet, films and musicals. He was creative and funny and lived to make people laugh. If you happened to be waiting next to him in line, by the end of it, you’d have told him your life story. He retired in '92, but continued to pore over medical journals, and friends never stopped calling for, or relying on, his help and advice.
He’s survived by his wife; his children, Don (Jane) Baumblatt, Geri Lynn Baumblatt (Jeff Biggus) and Juli Baumblatt; his two brothers, Glenn (Glady) Baumblatt, Michael (Sue) Baumblatt; and brother-in-law, Carl Mattie. He was preceded in death by his parents;and sister, Beth.
Special thanks to Dr. Paul Durbin, the nurses on 2C at All Saints, and his wonderful caregiver Undrakh Zundui.

Emma Jeanette Patrick
Mrs. Emma J. Patrick, 89, passed away at Our House Memory Care in Chippewa Falls on Sunday, May 23, 2010.
Emma was born in Franksville to the late Harold and Emma (nee: Johnson) Nyholm on September 18, 1920, and lived in the Racine area for 86 years. She was engaged to Wallace Patrick when he went to serve during World War II. Upon his return from the war they were united in marriage two weeks later on November 16, 1945. They resided in Racine until 1978. Then they became year-'round residents at Pan Yack Park on Eagle Lake. Emma retuned to Racine when Wallace preceded her in death on November 19, 1986.
Emma was a very independent person starting at a young age. When she was 4 years old she was bound and determined to attend school with her older brothers and sisters even though she was too young to attend the first grade. Because of her early attendance in school, she started high school at the age of 12 and graduated from Washington Park High School at age 16. Emma started her career as a bookkeeper at 18 years of age and worked for Knight-Barry Abstract for 36 years. She retired in 1975.
Mrs. Patrick was a longtime member of Atonement Lutheran Church. She was active in the Woman’s Club, the Cardiac Capers and the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary. She was also the bookkeeper of the gift shop at the hospital and an avid reader. Mrs. Patrick was a gracious lady and made many friends because she was a good listener and took interest in their lives. She also loved to try new recipes and took dinners to people that were ill.
Emma is survived by two children, Joseph (Pamela) Patrick of Silver City, New Mexico, and Kathleen (John) Wilk of Holcomb; six grandchildren, Kirstie (Tony) Misquez of Arvada, Colorado, Annelies (Marc) Brabant of Tucson, Arizona, Josh (Jacqui) Hampleman of Las Vegas, Nevada, Molly Patrick of Richmond, California, Sarah (Brad) Herrick of Madison and Mathew Wilk of Sheldon; five great-grandchildren, Levi, Lily, Finn, Eleanor and Iris; and two sisters-in-law, Gladys (Ed) Foldy of Racine and Naomi Kish of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold, Charles, Richard and Clarence; and three sisters, Mabel Phelps, Elizabeth Nelson and Miriam Nyholm as a child.
Funeral services will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church on May 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Denise Mbise and Rev. Linda Pliska officiating. Private interment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Barbara graduated from Wm. Horlick High School “Class of 1966,” and attended Gateway Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Barbara had an endless capacity for empathy, and an unyielding strength; she was the archetypical strong woman, and a role model for young and old alike. James R. Maddocks
James R. Maddocks, beloved son, grandson, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend was born to life on February 5, 1920. He was born to eternal life on May 14, 2010, having recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a huge party in which he sang “I’m 90 years old…” admirably.
Jim lived a full life. He had quite the Huck Finn upbringing as he grew up as an adventurous young lad in Superior, WI. Oh, the stories he would tell.
He enlisted in the Army on December 18, 1941, with the hope that he would be deployed with his best friend, Charlie McKeague, who eventually would become his brother-in-law.
He served in the Army Air Corps as a crew chief in North Africa, Italy, India and Burma. His one regret was that as he traveled his way around the world he lost a day that he would never get back, since he didn’t go back around again. Oh, the stories he would tell.
Upon his return in 1945, he returned to a teaching college in Superior, graduating in 1948. In August of 1948 he married the girl next door, Nancy (nee: McKeague). He was offered a teaching job at Washington Junior High which brought him to Racine. Nancy would join him in November. He taught there until he was offered a position teaching math at Horlick High School. He retired in 1983.
He had many interests in his life, although his family was at the top of the list. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Jim (Jean nee: Gergen); daughter, Nancy (Karl Frederick); son, Tom (Kitty nee: Neeb); daughter, Mary (Ken Waldo); and daughter, Peggy Buck; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by grandson James Buck.
Jim was an active member in the Knights of Columbus as financial secretary for many years. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading, telling stories and sitting fireside up north at “The cabin.”
We would like to thank the fine people at Harmony Assisted Living of of Kenosha as well as Hospice Alliance, who took such loving and companionate care of him in his final days. We’d also like to thank the many friends who have been praying for him. God bless you all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 21, 2010, at 1 p.m. at St. John Nepomuk Church,1903 Green St., with Rev. Curt Frederick officiating. Visitation will be held Friday at the church from 11 a.m. followed by the mass at 1 p.m. Private entombment with full military honors will be held at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. In lieu of flowers, the family will donate all memorials to the Knights of Columbus.

Leslie C. Smith
Leslie C. Smith, 94, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care Center-All Saints. Leslie was born on October 12, 1915, in Green Bay, the oldest son of Raymond J. and Milda (Bocher) Smith.
Leslie attended West High School and Green Bay Vocational School. He worked in Green Bay at Fairmont Dairy and Green Bay Printing and Engraving. On June 12, 1941, Leslie was united in marriage with Bernice L. Biebel at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. During World War II. Leslie worked at the Department of Commerce Building on the Mall in Washington, D.C., printing maps for the war effort. After the war he moved his young family to Racine and worked for Western Printing and Lithographing Company, retiring in 1977.
As a youngster growing up in the 1920s, Leslie would sometimes ride along with his Dad, a conductor with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Family trips to visit relatives in Gillette, Laona, Berry Lake, Two Rivers and Little Suamico were often by rail. This instilled a fondness for the unique sights and sounds of steam-powered trains that lasted throughout his life.
Leslie also had many memories of family trips by car to the small Wisconsin communities during an era when traveling along the scenic but often dusty and muddy roads was an adventuresome undertaking. Leslie had an interest in his family history, as some of his ancestors were early settlers during the pioneering age of early Wisconsin.
In retirement Leslie greatly enjoyed gardening and tending his large yard filled with various berry bushes and fruit trees. Leslie enjoyed cooking, and often made delightful dishes from the large variety of fruits and vegetables he grew and preserved. He enjoyed carpentry, skillfully remodeling several homes, and designed and built a garden house and mini-barn.
Leslie’s Catholic faith was very important throughout his life. Leslie and Bernice were members of St. Joseph’s Parish in Racine for over 50 years. Most of all, Leslie will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Leslie is survived by Bernice, his loving wife of almost 69 years; sons, Ronald (Diane) of Racine and Randall of Green Bay; daughter, Lois Caryn of Kenosha; granddaughters, Wendy (Ron) Goldschmidt of Waterford and Tracey (Tim) Lui of Racine; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Matthew Lahti and Melissa Lui; sister-in-law, Myra Holznecht.
He was preceded in death by brothers, John (Jack) Smith and Raymond E. (Tubby) Smith; brothers-in-law, Frank Holznecht and Loyal Biebel; and sisters-in-law, Helen and Alice Smith and Elaine Biebel.
Funeral services for Leslie will be held at Sturino Funeral Home on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at 6: 30 p.m. with Rev. Stephen J. Stradinger of St. Mary’s by the Lake Catholic Church officiating. There will be a visitation at Sturino Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 p.m. until service time at 6:30 p.m. Leslie will be laid to rest at Allouez Catholic Cemetery in Green Bay.
