10/09/1917 – 12/07/2013
Mildred I. Nelson (nee Hansen) transitioned to eternal life at age 96. She
was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Minnie Hansen, and brothers, Marvin and Gilbert. She will be reunited with her husband, Viggo, and sons, Marvin and Paul, who will be welcoming her home to be with the Lord.
Mildred was a life-long parishioner at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Racine
where she spent countless hours in support of the church. She was a member
of St. Monica’s Guild and the Alter Guild. Her baking prowess won accolades
for years from the Wednesday group at St. Luke’s. The clergy often found
themselves at our dinner table… no one left hungry and relationships deepened.
All of Mildred’s children graduated from her alma mater, William Horlick High
School: Evelyn ('59), Marvin ('61), Robert ('64), Paul ('67) and Frank
('70).
Additionally, she is survived by seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, in-laws and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Luke’s in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, 614 Main St., Racine on Saturday, December 14, at 10 a.m. Visitation will begin at 9a.m. Our family is honored to have this service officiated by Rev. James A. Kaestner, former rector at St. Luke’s and a family friend of over 50 years. Memorials to honor Mildred may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild c/o Susan Helwig, or to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
Our family extends its sincere gratitude to all the staff at Becker-Shoop where her many years of care were attentive and supportive. Ed Freuden, Mildred’s primary nurse, demonstrated skill and compassion above and beyond the call of duty.
Thank you, Ed.
