Mary Z. Rokosky, age 100, passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, at Ridgewood Care Center. Mary was born November 27, 1911, in Culver, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Paul and Magdalene (nee: Krsek) Zacek.
She was married to Emil J. Rokosky on September 11, 1937, in Chicago. They came to Racine in 1949, where Emil was the director of the Racine Zoo for thirty years. He died on June 23, 1981. Mary served as the secretary for the Racine Zoo and was instrumental in the organization of the Racine Zoo Auxiliary and Gift Shop. She also helped care for young animals that were abandoned by their mothers. She was a longtime member of St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church and enjoyed reading and traveling.
Survivors include nieces, Diane (George) Ahern, Patricia (Charles) Kash, Arlene (James) Dvorak, Gwendolyn (Kenneth) Baldwin; nephew, Florian Zacek; her longtime friend, Rosemarie Larsen; great nieces and great nephews; other relatives and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church, 1903 Green St., on Friday June 1, 2012, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Don Zirkel officiating. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church Friday from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to the Racine Zoological Society have been suggested.
