Sister Evelyn Novinski, O.P.

Sister Evelyn Novinski, O.P., 103, passed away at Siena Center, Racine, WI, on Monday, July 28, 2014.

Cecelia (Anna Cecilia) Novinski was born on September 8, 1910, to George and Wilhelmina (nee: Bruggeman) Novinski in Reliance, SD. On August 26, 1929, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1930 she was given the religious name Sister Evelyn. She professed her first vows in 1932 and her final vows in 1938.

Sister Evelyn spent many years in service to others in teaching. She began her ministry in 1929 at Nativity of Our Lord, Detroit, MI. In Michigan she also served at St. Clement, Centerline and Assumption Grotto, Detroit. Places in Wisconsin where she served were Holy Name, Sacred Heart and St. Edward, Racine; SS. Peter & Paul, Green Bay; St. John, Little Chute; St. Norbert, Roxbury; St. Victor, Monroe; Holy Cross, Kaukauna; and Our Lady of the Oaks, Pewaukee. She also served in New Mexico. After becoming a resident at Siena Center in 1989 she made many baskets and rosaries.

Sister Evelyn is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Raymond, Herbert, Luke, Anthony and George (stillborn); and her sisters, Sister Lambertine Novinski, O.P., Sister Luciana Novinski, O.P., Clare Cunningham and Evelyn Boos.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Friday, August 1, 2014, beginning at 9 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the staff of Wheaton Franciscan Hospice and the Supportive Living staff who cared for Sister Evelyn at Siena Center.
