Elmer A. Kaplan

Elmer A. Kaplan, age 90, passed away unexpectedly at his residence Wednesday afternoon, August 18, 2010. Elmer was born in Caledonia, WI, April 13, 1920, son of the late Wencil and Angeline (Nee: Simon) Kaplan and had been a lifelong resident.

Elmer graduated from William Horlick High School “Class of 1938.” During World War II he proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force, stationed in the European Theatre. It was at this time he found the love of his life, Mary Ann Marshall. On December 31, 1943, they were united in marriage at St. Bride’s Church in Cambuslang, Glasgow, Scotland. Elmer was employed by Walker Manufacturing for thirty-six years, retiring in 1982. He was a lifelong member of St. Rita Catholic Church, VFW Post 1391 since 1946 and the Modern Woodman since 1937. Elmer enjoyed gardening, camping, and woodworking. Above all he treasured time spent with his family. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; his daughter, Catherine Ann (Nolan “Ben”) Bender of Racine; his grandson, Jeff Bender; his late grandson’s wife, Lisa Bender; great-grandsons, James and Alex Bender, Matthew Dawson; sister, Marcille Janowski of Racine; sister-in-law, Ida Kaplan of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Bender; great-granddaughter, Amanda Bender; brothers and sister-in-law, George (Elsie) Kaplan, and Arnold Kaplan; and his brother-in-law, Edmund Janowski.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, August 23, 2010, at 7 p.m. at St. Rita Catholic Church, 4339 Douglas Ave. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Monday at the church from 5 p.m. until time of Mass at 7 p.m. All are also welcome for the committal services with Full Military honors to be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, Hwy 32.
