Sister Mary(Hildegarde) Wiest, O.P.

Sister Mary Wiest, O.P., 90, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine on Saturday, August 21, 2010.

Mary Margaret was born June 30, 1920, to George and Margaret (nee: Lins) Wiest in Plain, WI. On September 8, 1934, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1936 she was given the religious name Sister Hildegarde. She professed her first vows in 1938 and her final vows in 1944. In 1968 she returned to using her baptismal name Mary.

Sister Mary spent many years in service to others in education as a teacher, principal and Adult Learning Program Director and tutor. She began her ministry in 1938 at Holy Name, Racine, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Victor, Monroe; Sacred Heart and St. Edward, Racine; St. Mary, Mineral Point; St. Andrew, Verona; St. Mary, Pewaukee; St. Peter, East Troy; and St. Mary, Kansasville. She also served in Michigan. After moving to Siena Center she served as a Liturgy Coordinator and as the Director and tutor in the Adult Learning Program. She became a resident at Lakeshore Manor in January, 2008.

Sister Mary is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her sister, Rita Vielhuber; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Raymond Wiest, Cletus Wiest and Father Donald Wiest, OFM Cap.; her sister, Lucy McDonald; and infant sister, Celia Wiest.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Wednesday August 25, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the staff who cared for Sister Mary at Lakeshore Manor.
