Helen R. (Kaplan) Proeber

Helen R. Proeber, age 88, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the Elizabeth Residence.  Helen was born in Racine on March 22, 1924, daughter of the late Edward and Esther (Nee:  Peterson) Kaplan.

In her younger years, she played the snare drum in the Direct Credit Society marching band.  To help in the World War II effort, Helen was employed in the assembly of airplanes at J.I. Case.  She was later employed as an operator with Bell Telephone and with the Andis Company before raising her family. On August 11, 1945, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” F. Proeber. Helen was a member of the Lawsonomy Church, the Milwaukee Accordion club and the Summit Avenue Coffee Klatch Club. She volunteered for twenty-five years with both Meals on Wheels and the Lutheran Thrift Shop. In her spare time, Helen was an avid gardener, enjoyed baking and dancing, and loved caring for her grandchildren.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-seven years, Bill; her daughters and sons-in-law, Sandi (Charlie) Struebing of Caledonia, Patti Sackett of Racine, Becki (Peter) Otwaska of Racine; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Wilma Kaplan, Eunice Adensam and Robert Proeber, all of Racine; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, James Kaplan Sr.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Monday October 8, 2012, at 11 a.m., with her grandson Rev. Scott Struebing and Rev. Cary Wynn officiating. Private interment will be held at the Bohemian National Cemetery, Caledonia.  Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home Sunday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m.

The family extends a special thank you to the staffs at the Elizabeth Residence and Seasons Hospice for their compassion and caring hearts.
