John attended William Horlick High School. During World War II, at the age of 17, John enlisted in the United States Army. He served with the 136th Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion stationed in Germany. Returning from the war John began employment with, and retired from, Webster Electric after many years of employment.

He was united in marriage to LaVerne D. Luckfield. They divorced in 1969. To this marriage three daughters were born: Peggy (Dennis) Makovsky, Janet (David) Denny, Marcia (Hal) Ostrowski-Voepel. John is also survived by four grandchildren: Joshua Makovsky, Carrie Ann (Andy) Desnoyers, Dustin and Noah Denny; a great-grandson on the way; half-sister, Barbara Emmel; nieces, nephews and special friend, Emily. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David; sister, Marjorie (Vern) Tietz; and longtime companion, Janice Highman.

John was actively involved with the Alano Club, where he served as President, Treasurer and on the Board of Directors. Most importantly, he ministered to others during his long association with AA. His pastimes also included bowling and playing schafskopf. He will be dearly missed.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Chaplain Terry Peterson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m.    In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alano Club (Racine) have been suggested.

A very special thank you to the entire staff at the St. Monica’s, Becker-Shoop Center, and Hospice Alliance for their loving and compassionate care.
