Carol M. (Herdt) Dose

Carol Marie (Herdt) Dose, 74, passed away Sunday morning, Nov. 4, at her home after battling cancer for six years.

The second of seven daughters of Alex and Marie (Sensenbrenner) Herdt, Carol was born in Milwaukee on March 29, 1938. At age 3, her family moved to Lancaster, WI, where she attended St. Clement’s Catholic Grade School and a year at Lancaster High School. The family moved to Racine in 1952. After graduating from St. Catherine's High School she worked at Lau shoe store in Downtown Racine and then as a bookkeeper at the Journal Times, where she met her husband, Emmert.

They were married May 21, 1966. After working first full-time and later part-time, Carol eventually became a full-time homemaker, but devoted much time to charity work, including the St. Catherine's Infirmary at Sienna Center, Habitat for Humanity, Tex Reynolds Toys for Tots, yardwork for an elderly widow, third grade religion class teacher at Sacred Heart and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic churches, and the Lighthouse Brigade Booster Club.

Her goal was to make a rosary a day and each month she sent a box of rosaries to priests and nuns in Asia and Ireland. She also taught her religion class pupils rosary-making.

Carol loved to knit and received blue ribbons for her afghans and baby blankets at area county fairs, as well as for her baked goods. She enjoyed sharing her fresh home-baked bread, coffee cakes and Christmas cookies with friends and relatives. Every June would find her picking strawberries and delivering berries, whipped topping and shortcakes to neighbors and friends.

Carol loved camping and traveling in the family RV throughout the United States and across Canada and every fall filling the RV with toys, clothing and household goods to take to Appalachia. And for the past 17 years, she and Emmert used their RV to host musicians at the Racine Zoo's Animal Crackers jazz series. Carol also enjoyed painting, going to casinos and visiting the farm in Minnesota where Emmert grew up.

She is survived by her husband, Emmert; her “My three sons,” Christopher and Jonathan of Racine and Jeffery (Laura) of Franklin; and grandchildren, Justin Dose and Ayla Dose.

Also surviving are her sisters, Dorothy Beyer of LaCrosse, Alice (Robert) Markus of Racine, Jean (Walter) Stobb of Fort Meyer, FL, Joan (the late Donald) Schinkowitch of Racine, Rita (Donald) Nienhaus of Racine and Margaret (Paul) Rice of Troy Mich. Carol was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 9, 2012, at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. when funeral services will be held with Carol's grade school classmate, The Rev. William Seipp of Lancaster, WI, and Rev. Melanie Hammond-Clark officiating. Private interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to one’s favorite charity have been suggested
