Axel M. Gummeson

Axel Morgan Gummeson, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, July 11, 2010, in Houston, TX.

He was born in Minneapolis, MN, on February 24, 1924, son of the late Folke and Judith (Anderson) Gummeson. Axel graduated from High School in 1942.

He was a proud WWII veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. He spent 14 months in the European Theatre of Occupation.

Axel attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, and Trinity Divinity School in Chicago, IL graduating with a Bachelor of Divinity in 1952. On June 18, 1954, he was united in marriage to Vernalda E. Nelson of Clear Lake, Iowa. Axel served as a minister for 44 years with the Evangelical Free Church and the Free Methodist denominations. After his retirement, Axel continued his association with the Free Methodist Church and faithfully sent a yearly report chronicling his ongoing spiritual journey. Vernalda died on October 20, 2006. They were married for 53 years. Axel was a gifted musician, an avid reader, and blessed with a wonderful memory.

Surviving him are two children: son, Joel (Kathy) Gummeson of Belchertown, MA, and daughter Joy (Clark) Quandahl of Houston, TX; eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Jeff, James, Jordan, Josiah, Jillian, and Janelle Gummeson, and Eric Quandahl; two sisters: Betty (Ken) Evarts, Norma (Roger) Klingman; a brother Roy (Arlene) Gummeson; many nieces and nephews, and other relatives, as well as lives he touched throughout his ministry. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Janet (Brown) Gummeson; mother-in-law, Vivian (Turner) Nelson; father-in-law, Thomas Nelson, Sr.; and  brother-in-law, Tom Nelson, Jr.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in Dover, WI, at 11:30 a.m. The family will send any memorials to YWAM ministries designated for Jordan Gummeson who will begin missionary training this October.
