Donald H. Tredwell

Donald H. Tredwell passed away at his home Saturday, October 27, 2012.  He was 83 years old.  He was born July 7, 1929, in Vancouver, BC; raised in Bronxville, NY, and lived in the New York suburbs including Darien, CT, before moving to Racine.

He graduated with a BA in Economics from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, after which he served in the US Army during the Korean War.    He spent his career in advertising, marketing and brand management working in New York City for a number of companies, including McCann-Erickson, and Colgate-Palmolive before joining  SC Johnson & Son, Inc.  In 1981 he left the corporate world and he and two others started a venture-backed manufacturing company focused on selling medical products for diabetics.

Don had a zest for life that was contagious and a model for others.  He loved his sports and the outdoors, with a special love for tennis, squash, biking, hiking, skiing, canoeing and camping.  He also loved to travel and experience the world, oftentimes on a bike, in a canoe or train.  He was always curious, loved to learn, and shared a belief in life-long learning with his family.

Don was active in his communities and enjoyed giving back via his involvement with Rotary, The First Presbyterian Church, The Health Care Network, YMCA Camp Dudley, Darien, CT, Board of Education and various alumni organizations.

Don married Anne Graham Scott in 1955 and together raised three children, Jim, John and Susan.  The many adventures over the years with his family usually involved being active somewhere in the outdoors. A not uncommon occurrence would be a planned hike or activity meant to include all ages, which would inevitably turn a “nice” outing into an epic adventure and a great story.  His commitment to his family and his extended family will live on in the relationships that he helped form despite living far from all extended family.

Don and Anne were fortunate to spend the last 20 winters in Tucson, AZ, where the mountain views were breathtaking.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, and their energetic dog, Summer; sons, Jim  (Karen), in Pewaukee, WI,  and John (Susan) in Crystal Lake, IL; and daughter, Susan Kuruvilla (Greg) in San Diego, CA;  six grandchildren, Erika, Graham, Maggie, Christopher, Laura and Thomas; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Morrison.

A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held Saturday, November 3, at the First Presbyterian Church on College Avenue, Racine, WI, at 11 a.m. with a reception immediately following.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Presbyterian Church 716 College Ave., Racine, WI 53403 or The Health Care Network 904 State Street Racine, WI 53403
