Russell T. Johnson, 83, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Health Care-All Saints on Saturday March 20, 2010. Russell was a lifelong resident of Racine, born on November 24, 1926, the son of Russell M. and Roma (nee: Tobin) Johnson.
He was united in marriage to Emma Hansen on May 22, 1954, in Racine at Trinity United Methodist Church. Russell had been employed at Hamilton Beach and Massey Ferguson for many years. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed in the Philippines, and earned the rank of sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge.
Russell was an active and faithful member of Faith United Methodist Church for many years. In addition he was very involved with the Democratic Party. Russell volunteered at Winslow Elementary School and Racine County Jail as a tutor and was active with the CROP Walk associated with Faith United Methodist Church. During the Civil Rights Movement Russell was very involved with Project Breakthrough.
Russell is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Emma; their children, Karen (Glenn) Hickson, Heidi Johnson and Mark Russell Johnson all of Racine; grandchildren, Carrie Dygon of Kenosha and Michael Dygon of Racine; nephew, Robert (Diane) Johnson Jr.; cousins, Marceline Turkowski, Jim and Jane Colotta and Dennis Colotta all of Racine. He is further survived by other relatives and many dear friends.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert Johnson.
Funeral services for Russell will be held at Faith United Methodist Church, 1013 Harmony Drive, on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Listowel Mensah and Rev. Lois Grebe officiating. Russell will be laid to rest at West Lawn Memorial Park following services. There will be a visitation at Sturino Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family has suggested memorials to Faith United Methodist Church.
