George P. Karas

George P. Karas, 89, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 27, 2010, at Wheaton-Franciscan Hospital.

George Karas was born in South Milwaukee, WI, on April 10, 1920, to Peter and Akrive Karas.  The family moved to Racine in 1935 and he graduated from Park High School “Class of 1938.”  He entered the service in 1942 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corps in November 1945.

In 1944 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Filandrinos in Racine, and has lived in Racine his entire married life.

He graduated from Marquette Engineering School in May 1949 and was employed at several major companies in Racine and Milwaukee before retiring from Modine Manufacturing Co. in 1985.

He was a former member of Tau Beta Pi and Masonic Lodge 92, Milwaukee Scottish Rite, and Milwaukee Tripoli Shrine, and a long time member of Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Racine.

In retirement George enjoyed gardening and maintaining his yard as well as keeping up with current events.  His greatest joy was spending time with his family and offering his wisdom and assistance throughout their lives.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathryn (Filandrinos); his daughters, Kaye (William) Nelson of Vancouver, WA, Jane Karas of Racine; his sons, Paul Karas of Milwaukee, Dean (Peg) Karas of Chocowinity, NC, and Pete Karas of Racine.  He was an adored Papou to Halley Karas, Bradley Karas, Susan Guthrie, and Mike Palecek.  He is also survived by his sisters, Christine Rigas of California and Angie Thomas of Racine along with many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his sister, Emily Bonos.

Private funeral services were held with full military honors and burial at the Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Town of Dover.  Memorials to Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church have been suggested.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital for their compassion and care during his stay.

Mr. Karas was an amazing man. He was the grandfather I wish I had after I departed from the military. He helped me out more than anyone will ever know. Thank you.
