Margaret 'Maggie' (Tobin) Nelson

Surrounded by her loving family, Margaret “Maggie” Nelson, age 83, passed away Monday, June 6, 2011, at her residence. Margaret was born in Burlington, WI, on October 14, 1927, daughter of the late Frank and Emma (Nee: Zwiebel) Tobin.

Margaret was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Burlington and furthered her education at St. Teresa College in Winona, Minnesota. She worked as a radiation technician for several years at Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee. On July 15, 1950, at St. Charles Church in Burlington she was united in marriage to Dr. Marvin W. Nelson. Currently she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In her earlier years Margaret taught C.C.D. and confirmation classes.

She belonged to the Racine Country Club and was actively involved with several organizations including: Junior League of Racine, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Friends of St. Catherine’s, St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, St. Luke’s Hospital Auxiliary, Wisconsin State Medical Society Auxiliary, YWCA Festival of Lights, Prairie Auction, and the Racine Children’s Theater. Margaret volunteered for many years with the Racine Zoological Society flower planting and served on the board at the YWCA. She enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, swimming, downhill skiing and aquacising. More than anything she cherished time with her family. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her loving husband of sixty years, Dr. Marvin W. Nelson; her six children, Thomas (Carla) Nelson of Centenial, CO, and their children, Katie, Tobin, and Tyler, Susan (Jack) Rodencel of Dubai and their children, Lexi and Max, twins: Jane (Brian) Penticoff and their children, Jenna, Ellie, and Merritt and Julie Nelson, all of Gurnee, IL, Kristina (Steve) Wittchow of Burnsville, MN, and their children, Eric, Edward, Emma and Evan, Timothy (Jill) Nelson of Highland Ranch, CO, and their children Grace, Jonathon and William; sister, Patricia Scheller of Waterford; sister-in-law, Lois Duckworth of Madison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Joan Tobin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Earl (Ethel) Nelson, Janet (Harry) Tople, Avys (Lee) Lemmerhurt and Alton Duckworth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., with Rev. Ronald O. Crewe officiating, Deacon Russell Missureli assisting. Private interment will be held at Holy Family Cemetery, Caledonia. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Wednesday at the church from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Memorials to the Racine Zoological Society, St. Catherine’s High School, Lincoln Lutheran Home LINK, or to Hospice Alliance have been suggested.
