Sister Gabrielle (Gabriel) Hubert, O.P.

Sister Gabrielle Hubert, O.P., 91, passed away at Lakeshore Manor, Racine, on Monday, October 21, 2013.

Monica Agnes was born on March 7, 1922, to Herman and Martha (nee: Mistele) Hubert in Wilton, WI.  On August 30, 1939, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1940 she was given the religious name Sister Gabriel. She professed her first vows in 1942 and her final vows in 1948. In 1968 she changed her name to Gabrielle.

Sister Gabrielle spent many years in service to others in teaching and prison ministry. She began her ministry in 1942 at St. John, South Milwaukee. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Mary and Dominican College, Racine, and St. John, Little Chute. She also served at St. Francis, Ottawa, IL. In Georgia she served at Morehouse College in Atlanta and the Central State Hospital, Milledgeville.  In 1978 she moved to Tennessee and taught at the Columbia State Community College, Columbia, and then taught and did prison ministry at the Turney Correctional Center in Only, TN. When she moved to Siena Center in 1999 she continued to serve the Community as a switchboard operator and Adult Learning Program tutor. In October 2011 she became a resident of Lakeshore Manor, Racine.

Sister Gabrielle is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers Bernard (Elda), Lawrence (Barbara) and James (Janyne); and sisters, Mary Thompson, Cecilia Klapproth and Elizabeth Rottman; sisters-in-law, Elli Davids and Laura Hubert; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and her brothers, Raymond, Robert, Gerald and John; and two infant sisters, Margaret and Therese.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Friday October 25, beginning at 9 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the staff that cared for Sister Gabrielle at Lakeshore Manor.
