Eva M. (Giacinti) Smerchek

Eva M. Smerchek, age 97, passed away Monday, December 5, 2011, at Ridgewood Care Center. Eva was born in Racine, October 14, 1914, daughter of the late Raffaele and Ermelinda (Nee: Pagliari) Giacinti.

Eva was united in marriage to Ernest J. Smerchek who preceded her in death on Valentine’s Day in 1970. She and her husband farmed in Caledonia for over fifty years. Eva served as member and past President of Vittoria Colonna, President and “Woman of the Year” of the former Caledonia Woman’s Club, and was a former 4-H leader. For many years she enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary’s Hospital, Opportunity Center, and Career Industries. Eva lived a life of service to others, always caring for family and friends when in need. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Ione Giacinti; nieces and nephews, Linda D’Acquisto, Frank (Lisa) D’Acquisto, Connie (Jack) Falbo, Emily Selovich, John (Judy) Talos, Marianna Giacinti, Louis (Christine) Giacinti, Ralph (Lori) Giacinti, Jeff (Jane) Giacinti, Dan Giacinti, Diane Giacinti, David (Carolyn) Giacinti, Calvin Svoboda, Jay Jensen; other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her sisters, Caroline (John) Talos, Amelia (Frank) D’Acquisto; and her brothers, Ralph and Louis Giacinti.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, December 9, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., with Rev. Ronald O. Crewe officiating, assisted by Deacon Russell Missureli. Interment will follow at Caledonia Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. (Vittoria Colonna Service at 10:30 a.m.) In lieu of flowers, memorials to Ridgewood Activity Center have been suggested.

The family extends a special thank you to Eva’s special friends and neighbors for all their love and support through the years.
