“Floating above the room, looking down at their faces unaware of my presence, then back in my body looking up at them still oblivious to my consciousness. As I wander between life and death they don’t think I can hear their frail voices, whisper of the next step, vital procedure. Or see the wrinkles that are permanently furrowing between their eyebrows, tears seem out of place.”

Chester V. Krusienski
Chester V. Krusienski of Racine passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2014. He was born in Racine on August 18, 1913, and celebrated his 100th birthday this past summer.
Krusienski was married for 75 years to the former Julia Joo, the love of his life, who passed away in July 2007. The two of them operated The Camera House on Douglas Avenue, working side-by-side until they retired in 1976. Many people continued to stop him in area stores in later years to tell him he took their wedding photos, which they continue to cherish.
In addition to being an expert photographer, Krusienski began his love of boats and sailing at a very young age as he built his first sailboat when he was nine years old. At 13 he became the youngest member of the Racine Yacht Club, and 50 years later he was honored as a Lifetime member.
Over the years he captained his sailboats to numerous victories in a variety of Lake Michigan races, such as the Mackinac and Queen’s Cup. He loved his three children and would do anything for them. He loved his grandchildren more than life itself as he and his wife cared for them whenever needed.
He taught his grandsons how to carve wood and all the different parts of boats so they could learn how to build their own boats. They still have their creations and cherish the time they had with their grandfather.
He often said how fortunate he was to live long enough to meet his two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emma. It was obvious how much they meant to him when they sat on his lap.
He worked for the U.S. Government during WW II, constructing specialty boats in a factory alongside the Root River where the Main Street Bridge is currently located.
Before that, he worked at the Douglas Theater, which was owned by his family until it was sold to the Fox Corporation in the early '50s. Then, he and his wife, Julia, opened The Camera House on Douglas Avenue where they worked side-by-side until it was closed in 1976.
Over the years he built wood models of sailboats and ships, which were purchased by people in England, France, Holland, San Francisco, Seattle, Racine, and other locations around the world. His wood working skills extended to building doll house furniture, with extreme craftsmanship detail.
Krusienski, and his wife, will be remembered by many people, especially those in need who they helped throughout the years. He was known for his many stories about sailing. He would often comment, “There is something about water and sailing. It satisfies the inner soul.”
Krusienski had three children: Brian Krusienski of Chicago, Gale (Tom) Haakensen of Racine, and Joy (Gary) Vaillancourt of Racine. He had four grandchildren, Meghan (Jim) Edmonson of Sugar Grove, IL.; Cullen Rude of San Francisco; Casey Rude of Kenosha, and Connor Rude of Kenosha. In addition he has two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emma Edmonson.
Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Friday, February 21, 2014, from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. At 2 p.m. a time of sharing memories will be held followed by interment at Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends of Chester make donations to a charity of their choice.
The family would like to express their sincere and heartfelt appreciation to Racine Oncologist Michael Mullane for his expertise, caring personality, and his genuine love of Chester. In addition, thank you to Debbie, Connie, Lisa and Mary from Hospice Alliance, who became special friends to Chester. Special appreciation is extended to Tiffany of Hospice Alliance who often was Chester’s daily companion. Also assisting Chester on a regular basis were his friends Joan Szymczak and former crew member Ardis Cherkinian.

Ralph Hampton Lane
Ralph Hampton Lane, of Racine, Wisconsin, died in Racine on February 6, 2014, at the age of 79 years. He was the son of the late Thomas Clinton Lane and the late Georgia Marie Lane (née Hampton), of Elmhurst, Illinois and Boca Raton, Florida.
Born in Elmhurst, Illinois, on June 6, 1934, he graduated in 1952 from York Community High School, where he was President of the local chapters of the National Honor Society and the International Thespian Society. He was educated at the University of Rochester, where he studied history and music (A.B., 1956), and at the Harvard Law School (LL.B., 1959).
He served in the U.S. Army for two years, giving concerts throughout Europe as the conductor of the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra. Returning from service in 1961, he practiced law in Chicago for four years with the firm of Defrees and Fiske and then undertook graduate studies in music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, receiving a Master of Music degree in 1966 and serving thereafter as an officer and instructor in the school, a horn player in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the conductor of various church choirs and community orchestras.
Appointed in 1970 as Professor of Music and Dean of the Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University of Wisconsin, he served briefly in those capacities before being invited to the law department of S.C. Johnson & Son, in Racine, where he served as a trademark attorney for sixteen years. During much of that period, he was also the conductor of the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra (Hinsdale, Illinois) and of the Wheaton Summer Symphony, and also conducted the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and guest conducted several others in Illinois and in Arlington, Virginia. He served also as Vice Chairman of the board of directors of the American Symphony Orchestra League, as well as a board member of the United States Trademark Association.
In Racine, with encouragement and generous support from the community, he and friends founded Opera Racine, which was active from 1977 through 1981. He conducted all of its performances.
Taking the early retirement option from S.C. Johnson & Son in 1987, he accepted the invitation of Foley & Lardner to establish a trademark practice in its home office in Milwaukee, where he served as head of that practice group for a decade. During that time, he was listed in several editions of The Best Lawyers in America. Retiring from Foley & Lardner in 1997, and soon tiring of retirement, he entered the Chicago firm of Pattishall, McAuliffe and, to avoid the daily commute to Chicago, in 1999 established his own trademark practice in Racine, which continued into 2013.
In 1999 he also established Philharmonia Racine, an orchestra giving training to young musicians, and in 2004 expanded it into the Milwaukee Summer Philharmonia, comprised mostly of professional musicians of greater Milwaukee, which he led until his death.
Mr. Lane continued throughout his life the study of history, most especially music history and European history. He and his family traveled frequently in Europe, as an extension of those studies.
He is survived by his wife, Ursula (née Retzlaff), whom he met during his military service in Europe; by his sons, David (Nancy), of Rochester, New York, and Thomas (Minerva), of San Francisco, California; and by grandchildren, Evan Lane and Kelsey Lane, both of Rochester, New York, and Spencer Lane, of San Francisco, California. He and Ursula celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on May 11th, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 4701 Erie St., on Monday, February 10, 2014, at noon, with Rev. Dustin M. Fecht officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services at noon.
