Warren M. Snyder, 97, passed away on Tuesday February 16, 2010, at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center. Warren was born in Virginia, Minnesota, on May 11, 1912, the son of William and Anna (nee: Madera) Snyder. He was united in marriage to Clara Bergholz on September 11, 1937, in Milwaukee. Warren was a graduate of William Horlick High School “Class of 1931.” He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Warren along with his wife, Clara, owned and operated Snyder’s 5c-$1.00 Store on Taylor Avenue for 30 years. He was a longtime member of Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, former member of the Zoological Society along with coordinating Safari Day, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the first and last president of Badger Variety Wholesale and a member of Taylor Avenue Business Assoc.
Warren was scorekeeper for all home basketball games at Horlick High School from his high school graduation until 1963. As of December 1, 2009, he was the longest living basketball letterman Alumnus of Wm. Horlick High School. Warren was a builder of Camp Anokijig during the Great Depression and continued to be a supporter for many years through the “Y-Bees” group.
Warren is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Henning of Racine; one son, Michael (Sandy) Snyder of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Andrew Snyder of Atlanta, Lynne Snyder of Bloomington, Indiana, Jeffrey Snyder of Atlanta, Karen (Ron) Ehlers of Wisconsin Dells. He is also survived by foreign student, Conchita Poncini of Geneva, Switzerland; first cousin, Margaret (Fred) Kellner of Union Grove; special friend, Helen Gill of Racine; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, loyal customers and many dear friends.
Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Clara, on February 1, 2000; daughter Ellen Jo Snyder; foreign exchange student Josie (nee: Caccam) Sison; son-in-law, Paul Henning; granddaughter, Kathy Henning-Kunert; sister, Josephine; sister and brother-in-law, Verda (Larry) Johnson; and one brother and sister-in-law, William (Annetta) Snyder.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 2417 Drexel Ave., with Rev. Molly Doreza officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery. There will be a visitation at Sturino Funeral Home on Friday evening, February 19, 2010, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and at church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer or Camp Anokijig would be greatly appreciated.
