Elroy M. Hammes

A lifelong resident of Racine, Elroy Hammes passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the age of 98.

Blessed with a loving marriage of 67 years, he will be deeply missed by his wife, Doris; daughters, Donna (Harvey), Janet and Carrie (Ken); brother, Dr. James R. (Barbara) Hammes; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald; and sister, Vera.

Elroy and his wife, Doris, were active ballroom dancers for 60 years. They also enjoyed fishing, golf, travel, nature, and cultivating their rose garden together. Elroy was a devoted husband and father. He was a lifelong employee of J.I. Case Co. Among his diverse interests and talents, he taught classes at the Racine Vocational Evening School. Elroy built the family home as a team with his wife and father. He was a founding member and created music venues for the Racine Ballroom dance group (Dance Set) for 25 years.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday, March 22, at 1:30 p.m. with memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. Private interment. The family has suggested memorials in Elroy’s name to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
