Kathryn J. 'Kay' Karas

Kathryn J. Karas, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at Wheaton-Franciscan Hospital.

Kay was born in Racine, WI, on February 19, 1923, to Gust and Demetra Filandrinos. She graduated from Washington Park High School “Class of 1941.” On February 20, 1944, Kathryn was united in marriage to George P. Karas. She was a life-time member of Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Racine.

Kay devoted her life to her family, while her kindness was cherished by all who knew her. Her cooking and baking of Greek specialties were her trademarks. She also took joy in crafting holiday snowmen. Kay had a lovely voice and enjoyed singing, with “God Bless America” being her favorite. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was an avid Brewer baseball fan. She will be dearly missed by her family, relatives and friends, but her spirit will live on eternally.

Survivors include her children, Jane Karas of Racine, Kaye (William) Nelson of Vancouver, WA, Paul Karas of Wauwatosa, Dean (Peg) Karas of Chocowinity, NC, and Pete Karas of Racine. She was an adored “Yiayia” to Halley Karas, Brad Karas, Susan Guthrie, and Mike (Monica) Palecek. She is also survived by her brother, Rev. Theodore Filandrinos of Burnsville, MN; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 27, 2010; her brother, Peter Filandrinos; and her sisters, Angeline Loumos, Jane Poulakos, Ann Filandrinos and Helen Drivas.

Private funeral services have been held at Kimissis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. John Ketchum and Rev. Theodore Filandrinos officiating, with interment at the Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, Town of Dover. Memorials to the church or one’s favorite charity have been suggested.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ansani, Dr. Berce, and the staff at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital for their compassion and care during her stay.
