Amelia 'Millie' B. (Kane) Checki

Amelia (Millie) B. Checki passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Lincoln Village Convalescent Center. She was born in Ridgway, IL, on May 20, 1932, daughter of the late Edward and Elfrieda (Nee: Wenzel) Kane.

Millie graduated as Valedictorian from Ridgway High School in the Class of 1950. Her wish was to attend college to become a schoolteacher. Though lacking the financial ability to pursue that goal at that time, she went on to be an outstanding teacher by example for all those she knew on how to live an admirable and rewarding life.

On June 23, 1956, in Ridgway, IL, she was united in marriage to George J. Checki of Racine. Millie was employed by Twin Disc for many years until her retirement in 1995. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, as well as the Moose Lodge #437.

Loved by all, she devoted her life to her family and will be remembered for her down-to-earth kindness, her easy smile, her ability to persevere positively through adversity, her love of cooking (she fed everybody), and for the genuine joy she brought to those who were fortunate enough to know her. Throughout her full life, she was always concerned with the welfare of others above herself. She will be sadly missed.

Survivors include her husband, George; children, Joseph (Jodi) Kane, Susan Gerlach and Sara Checki; granddaughters, Nicole and Sara Koshen; brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, James (Helen) Checki, Ronald (Christine) Checki and Marilyn Checki; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many dear friends. In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by her five one-of-a-kind older brothers, Gregory, Delmar, Dale, Eugene and Ralph.

Friends and relatives are welcome to pay respects and meet with the family for Visitation any time on Friday, February 18, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home at 803 Main St. in Racine. Visitation will also be held at St. Joseph Church, 1533 Erie St., on Saturday, February 19, at 9:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum. Memorials to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.
