Sister Monica Gabriel, O.P.

Sister Monica Gabriel, O.P., 93, passed away at Golden Living Center, Kenosha, WI, on Wednesday, February 16, 2011.

Loretta Marie was born April 2, 1917, to Bernard and Ida (nee: Roth) Gabriel in Detroit, MI. On August 2, 1931, she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1933 she was given the religious name Sister Mona. She professed her first vows in 1935 and her final vows in 1941. In 1946 she changed her name to Monica.

Sister Monica spent many years in service to others as an artist and teacher. She began her ministry in 1935 at St. Clement, Center Line, MI. Places in Racine where she served were St. Edward, Sacred Heart, St. Catherine High School, Dominican College and Siena Center. She also served at Holy Angels, Milwaukee; Holy Redeemer College, Waterford; and at an art studio in Chicago, IL. She became a resident at Golden Living Center, Kenosha, in November 2008.

Sister Monica is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers, Gregory (Edithanne), Ray and Timothy; sisters, Marie (Laurence) Sidebottom, Virginia Rinke and Joan (Rodney) Brunton; sisters-in-law Elizabeth, Mary, Dolores, Theresa and Fran Gabriel; brother-in-law, John Urban; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; step-mother, Mary Agatha Gabriel; her brothers, Richard, Edward, James, Bernard and Leonard; and sisters Phyllis Lemanski, Lorraine Richardson, Dolores Gabriel and Bernice Urban.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Tuesday, February 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the Hospice Alliance Staff and the staff that cared for Sister Monica at Golden Living Center.

Sister Monica was a wonderful religious, a great artist and a good teacher. I was blessed to have known Monica and to have had her for a student. My appreciation of art is thanks to her love of art. I will thankful to God for her love and her witness. Patrick Keyes, CSSR
