Ruth R. Gedwardt

Ruth R. Gedwardt, age 83, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Wheaton-Franciscan All Saints Medical Center. Ruth was born in Racine, November 30, 1926, daughter of the late Bruno L. and Agnes E. (Nee: Koleske) Gedwardt and was a lifelong resident of Racine.

Ruth retired as Executive Director of Civil Legal Services Inc. She was elected to represent the 1st District as a Racine County Board Supervisor for thirty-eight years. Ruth served on many Boards and supported many other Racine organizations – to name a few – Gateway Technical College, Racine Public Library, Racine Taxpayers Association, Commission on Aging, The United Way, Catholic Social Services, Racine Convention & Visitors Bureau, Racine Historical Museum, Toys for Tots, Neighborhood Watch & The Women’s Club.

She really loved politics and was steps ahead of her time in the political arena. Ruth dedicated her life to volunteering in Racine County, her greatest and strongest commitment. As a result of her work, she was recognized by receiving the Gateway Technical College Greiber Award, The YMCA Woman of Distinction Award, and the Horlick High School Graduate of Distinction (Class of 1945).

Anyone who encountered Ruth can attest that she was a strong, fiery, ambitious woman. She was truly one of a kind, always dressed to the nines and ready for the party. Her vibrant hats were her signature piece and she had one for all occasions. She had an amazing ability to find the best in people and in turn made them see the best in themselves. She was an inspiration to all and will live on in our hearts and memories. We love you, Auntie!

Survivors include her nieces and nephew, Brenda (Mike) Graham, Sue Pawzun, Candace Herriot and Christopher (Cindy) Kowalsky; great-niece and nephews, Jamison (Eileen) Beesley, Nikki (Bronson) Reed, Christopher Cook, Colton & Grace Kowalsky; great-great-nieces & nephews, Avril & JD Beesley and Cannon Reed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in law, Grace F. (Bob) Kowalsky.

Many, many thanks to the great friends who supported her throughout her life and most recently though her illness. Ruth was surrounded by love which was apparent by the number of visits, cards, flowers and prayers she received.

A Memorial Service celebrating Ruth’s life will be held Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. at St. John’s Chapel at DeKoven Center, 600 21st St., with Rev. Travis DuPriest officiating. A reception celebrating Ruth’s life will follow at the Great Hall.

Special thanks to Dr. Michael Mullane, Dr Jesse DeGroot and Wheaton Franciscan Hospital Staff & Hospice Care for their compassionate care during a difficult time
