Luella M. (Christy) Nissila

Surrounded by the love of her family, Luella M. Nissila, age 86, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Oak Ridge Care Center, Union Grove, WI. Luella was born in Marinette, WI, on August 21, 1924, daughter of the late Earl and Victoria (Nee: St. Onge) Christy and had been a resident of Sturtevant since 1964.

On August 12, 1944, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood, MI, she was united in marriage to Matt A. Nissila, who preceded her in death on January 27, 1995. She retired from Farm and Fleet in 1985 after over thirty years of employment. Luella was an active member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Senior Group. She also volunteered with the Red Cross and Toys for Tots. Luella was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her six children, Victoria Maki of Racine, Stephen (Phyllis) Nissila of Eugene, OR, Katherine Wright of Racine, Judith Chapin, Mary (Stephen) Sorenson, Timothy (Tina) Nissila, all of Sturtevant; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Lillian (Charles) Mueller of WI; brother, Peter (Kitty) Christy of MN; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Andrew Nissila, Lillian Rayala, both of Manitowish Waters, WI, Delores Christy of WI; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan; son, Matthew; sisters and brothers, Joyce, Muriel, Frances, James and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, December 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 3100 95th St., Sturtevant, with Rev. Paul L. Raczynski officiating. Private interment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Thursday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at 11 a.m. Memorials to St. Sebastian Catholic Church have been suggested.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Vitas Hospice and Oak Ridge Care Center for their loving and compassionate care.
