John H. Stracke Sr.

John H. Stracke Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, Veterans Day, November 11, 2013, at the Hospice House, Racine at the age of 91, with family by his side.

He was born July 2, 1922, in Wausaukee, Wisconsin, son of the late Peter M. and Eleanor (Nee: King) Stracke.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie (Ulrich); sisters, Eleanor, Jacqueline (Donald) Fonk; and brother, Peter (Mary) Vassalo.

John was raised in Racine and DePere, Wisconsin. He graduated from Washington Park High School in Racine. He attended St. Norbert College prior to World War II. John served in the U.S. Navy as Pharmacist Mate during World War II. He was stationed overseas at USN Base Hospital #6 (Espiritu Santo) New Hebrides in 1944-45.

John and Rose Marie met at Marquette University in the late 1940s. Both obtained their Master's degrees there. They were married at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Kenosha on October 13, 1951. They were married for 57 years.

After working for Armour Labs in Illinois, John came back to Racine and was the Laboratory Director for the City of Racine Health Department. During retirement he enjoyed woodworking, traveling, writing opinion letters to the editor and family activities. He will be deeply missed.

Surviving are three children, John (Patti) Stracke of Mt. Pleasant, Rose Ann (Darrell) Beth of Mt. Pleasant, Eileen Heather McGovern of Oak Forest, IL; four grandchildren, Aaron J. Stracke, Nolan W. Stracke, John K. Cobian and Kayla J. Smith; two step-grandchildren, Robert Beth and Lisa Ellis; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Mark R. Jones officiating. Private interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, 2530 Kinzie Ave. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Friday at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m.
