Sister Mary Florian Schneider, O.P

Sister Mary Florian Schneider, O.P., 94, passed away at Siena Center in Racine, WI, on Wednesday, October 12, 2011.

Dorothy Margaret was born June 13, 1917, to Edward and Matilda (nee: Rademacher) Schneider in Fowler, MI. On March 14, 1934, she joined the Racine Dominicans, and at her reception in 1936 she was given the religious name Sister Mary Florian. She professed her first vows in 1938 and her final vows in 1944.

Sister Mary Florian spent many years in service to others in teaching primary children. She began her ministry in 1937 at St. Edward, Racine, WI. Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Francis Xavier, Merrill; St. Aloysius, Sauk City; St. Bernard, Madison; St. Norbert, Roxbury; St. Joseph, Sacred Heart, St. Patrick, St. Rose and Holy Trinity, Racine; Holy Cross, Kaukauna; Holy Angels, Milwaukee; St. Mary, Tomah; and St. Luke, Plain. She also served in Michigan. She became a resident at Siena Center in 2000.

Sister Mary Florian is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; her brothers, Joseph, Alvin (Dorothy), Leonard (Jean), Louis (Betty), Hilary (Norma) and Edwin (Rosalie); sister-in-law Trelles Schneider; brother-in-law Erwin Lenneman; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Andrew and Leo; and sisters, Catherine Heckman, Ann Lenneman, Kathy, Antoinette and Marie Schneider.

Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel, 5635 Erie St., on Friday, October 14, 2011, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 2:30 p.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

The Racine Dominicans would like to extend their thanks to the staff  of Hospice Alliance and the staff of Supportive Living who cared for Sister Mary Florian at Siena Center.
