Irene L. Billings, age 80, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Medical Center. Irene was born in Durham, KS, on Valentine’s day, February 14, 1931, daughter of the late George and Anna (nee: Krieger) Weitzel.
Irene graduated from Wm. Horlick High School. On August 14, 1948, she was united in marriage to Willard Billings; they shared forty-one years together before he passed away on May 10, 1989. Irene was employed with St. Mary’s Medical Center as a nurse’s aide for twenty-three years before her retirement in 1989. She was a dedicated member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and their Mission Guild, Ladies Bible Class and their sewing circle. Irene had an extensive collection of Angels that she adored. Above all, it was her time spent with her family that gave her the most joy, especially family camping trips.
She will be dearly missed by her children, George (Irene) Billings, Elaine Billings, Robert John Billings and Walter Billings; granddaughter, Lynn Billings (fiancĂ©, Arthur “Benny” Smith), all of Racine; and her grandpuppy, Angel; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Willard, Irene was also preceded in death by her four brothers, George, Benjamin, Alex and David; and three sisters, Anna, Selma and infant Selma.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Daniel B. Quinn officiating. Interment will follow at Mound Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. Memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church Altar Guild or Mission Guild have been suggested.
