Kay Kennedy Koehn

Kay (nee: Kennedy) Koehn, 74, passed away at Ridgewood Care Center on Friday, January 30, 2009.

She was born on October 4, 1934, in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, the daughter of Oscar B. and Edna (nee: Keyes) Kennedy. Kay attended schools in her hometown of LaFarge where she was a cheerleader for her four years at LaFarge High School, graduating in 1952. She went on to complete her degree from Vernon County Teachers College in Viroqua, Wisconsin, graduating in 1954. Kay went on to teach in the LaFarge area for three years, grades one through four, Barneveld Elementary School, grades five and six for three years, along with Sun Prairie School sixth grade for one year.

On June 3, 1961 Kay was united in marriage to Robert Koehn in Madison. She continued teaching with Monroe Elementary School grades five and six, and Powers Elementary School for three years in the Beloit Tuner School System. During this time she continued her education, completing her teaching degree from UW Platteville in 1965. She also did graduate work in reading from Cardinal Stritch College.

Kay relocated with her husband Bob to Racine and taught fifth and sixth grades at Stephen Bull, and spent her last 19 years at J.I. Case High School in the Reading Resource Center in conjunction as an advisor with the Pep Club. Kay retired in 1990 with more than 35 years in education.

Kay was a faithful and proud member of Franksville United Methodist Church, and Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC). Kay enjoyed her retirement and traveling, especially the trips to New York, New Jersey, Niagara Falls and New Orleans and found great enjoyment in spending 15 winters in Arizona.

Kay is survived by her husband, Robert; brother, Rodney D. Kennedy of Racine; and sisters-in-law, Pat Kennedy of LaCrosse, Bess Koehn, Verneal Korn, all of Rockford, IL; nieces, Susan (Rich) Torine of Racine, Vicky Moutsopoulos of LaCrosse, Debbie (Brenda Borkenhagen) Koehn of Schaumburg, IL, Sandra (Mark) Green of St. Charles, IL, Kathy Koehn and Denise (Tom) Freethy all of Rockford; nephews, Sean Kennedy of Anchorage, Alaska, Stuart Kennedy of Mesa, AZ, Steve Kennedy of Amery, WI, Brice (Theresa) Kennedy of Westcliff, CO., and Todd (Cody) Kennedy of Denver, CO.; exchange student, Andres (Monica) Navas and their children, Andres Jr. and Stephanie all of Paterson, NJ. She is further survived by great nieces, great nephews other relatives and many dear friends.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold (Martha) Kennedy and Ronald Kennedy; two sisters, Phyllis Kennedy and Dorothea Kennedy; and brothers-in-law, John Korn and James Koehn.

Memorial services honoring and celebrating Kay’s life will be held at Franksville United Methodist Church, 10402 Northwestern Ave., Franksville, on Saturday, February 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Kaye Glennon officiating. There will be a memorial visitation from 9:30 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Franksville United Methodist Church Building Fund or Ridgewood Care Center would be appreciated.

The Koehn family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Ridgewood Care Center for the fine care and compassion given to Kay.
