Ladis P. Zahalka

Ladis “Laddie” P. Zahalka, age 89, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2009. Ladis was born in Racine on February 26, 1919, son of the late Ladis and Frances (Nee:Gondert) Zahalka.

Ladis graduated from Wm Horlick High School “Class of 1936” and it was in 1936 that while golfing he made the first “Hole in One” of the season at Washington Park Golf Course. During WWII, Ladis served in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 36th Bomber Squad.

On November 16, 1946, in Racine he was united in marriage to Ann Dudish who preceded him in death, May 17, 2005. Ladis was employed by Western Publishing Co for over 45 years retiring in 1984 and had been a member of Local 577 for the past 70 years. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the many fishing trips to Canada with his wife. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his brothers, Donald (Jean) Zahalka of Oshkosh,WI, William Zahalka of Racine; his sister, Betty Zahalka of Racine; sister-in-law, Margaret Orban of Racine; nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and many dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three sisters, Cleo Zahalka, Gwen “Snookie” Bukacek and Marcile Zahalka.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home, Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 6 p.m. with Rev. Victoria Millar officiating. Private interment will be held at Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until time of service.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Ladis’s niece and caregiver, Jamie “Jane” Brooks for her love and compassion.
