Jane Ruth (nee: Mayhew) Christensen, 91, passed away at her daughter’s home on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. She was born in Racine on May 29, 1917, the daughter of Raymond and Florence (nee: Raap) Mayhew.
Jane was a William Horlick High School graduate. She was married in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1938 to Howard Christensen. They owned and operated White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, WI, for many years. After retirement Howard and Jane moved to Florida, living in Homestead and N. Fort Meyers. Jane was a former member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Racine and All Souls Episcopal Church in Fort Meyers, FL. She enjoyed square dancing, fishing, traveling and most of all being with her family and friends, especially the time spent with her great-grandchildren.
Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa (Jim) Tornoe of Racine; son, Stephen Christensen of Miami, FL; two grandchildren, Robert Tornoe and Kristen (Nick) Basile; six great-grandchildren, R.J., Rick, Melanie and Megan Tornoe, Vinnie and Domenic Basile all of Racine; sister, Lucille (Elmer) Felbab of Barefoot Bay, FL; nieces and nephew, Judy (David) Cook, Jill Parker, Jim Felbab and Susan Dixon. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Jane was preceded in death be her husband, Howard, on June 26, 2004, a son, Robert; parents; and step-father, Dave Mayer.
Memorial services will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church, 13207 Hwy G, on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 2 p.m. Private inurnment will take place at Graceland Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the church on Saturday before services from 1 p.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Louis Catholic Church.
Thank you to the staff at Community Care and special granddaughter, Kristen, for the loving and compassionate care given to Jane. Without them she would not have been able to stay at home.
