Sherman A. Groenke

Sherman A. Groenke, age 93, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008, at Wheaton-Franciscan All Saints Medical Center. Sherman was born in Racine on November 15, 1914, son of the late Herman and Madge (Nee: Vollman) Groenke.

On June 27, 1942, he was united in marriage to Helen E. Jordan. During World War II he served in the United States Coast Guard. Sherman was a commercial artist at John Goes Studio in Milwaukee for many years until his retirement. During his career he also considered himself a Sunday painter. Sherman Groenke was described as truly a master of the watercolor medium. His work was exhibited across the United States and in Europe and had been compared to that of Andrew Wyeth. His work was so real and so good that people often wondered if he traced the images. He was a phenomenal painter. He enjoyed painting the hues of fall and winter the most. Sherman was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, American Watercolor Society, and longtime member of the Racine Yacht Club. He enjoyed sailing but most of all loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-six years, Helen; his daughter and son-in-law, Jill (Greg) Park of Ohio; special niece, Lynn Daleski and her daughters, Anne and Katie; niece, Carole (Larry) Scheel and family; nephew, Edward Groenke and family; and many dear friends. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Edward.

Funeral services will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 2915 Wright Ave., Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at noon with Rev. Warren Williams officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Atonement Lutheran Church have been suggested.
