Vernon J. 'Lucky' Hansen

Vernon J. 'Lucky' Hansen, 83, of West Palm Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 6, 2008, at Hospice of Palm Beach County.

Lucky was born in Kenosha, WI, on November 27, 1924, son of the late Robert Jones and Lila (Nee: Count) Hanson. On February 3, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mary DeRose who preceded him in Death on May 16, 2004.

During World War II, Lucky proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic and later re-enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as an aircraft maintenance instructor stationed in Bangor, Maine.

For most of his career he was a journeyman finish carpenter, once owning his own cabinet shop in Sarasota, Florida. He eventually returned to Racine and finished his career in the home improvement department at Sears. He and Mary retired to West Palm Beach in 1984. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Roma Lodge. He loved dancing and was once a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Dance Studios. He and Mary won many dancing contests in the Racine and Sarasota areas. He enjoyed traveling and golf and recorded twelve holes-in-one over his lifetime. He also enjoyed using his expert carpentry skills to help family and friends with many remodeling projects. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children, Jim (Marge) Hansen of Luck, WI, Wayne (Pat) Hansen of Green Valley, AZ, MaryAnn Hansen of West Palm Beach, FL, Jerry Hansen of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Rick, Larry, Gabriel, Nicole, Nicolas, Jennifer, Thomas, Kimberly, Daniel, Timothy, Anthony; and 23 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brothers, Jerald (Betty) Hanson, Ralph Jones of Kenosha; sisters, Mary Weaver of Bartlett, IL, Roberta Uphill of Copperas Cove, TX, Dorothy Thomas of Palms, MI; in-laws, Alberta (Dominic) Lipari, Santo (Sharon) DeRose, Joseph DeRose, Josephine (Donald) Pfaffl; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Hans Hanson; in-laws, Ralph and Susie DeRose; brothers, Richard, Raymond and Ted Hanson; sisters, Vivian Debruin and Shirley Spencer; nephew, Michael Pfaffl; and niece, Angela DeRose.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ronald O. Crewe officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow at Holy Cross Garden Mausoleum, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Monday from 5 p.m. until 7:00 P.M. (Roma Lodge Service at 6:00 P.M.) and at the church on Tuesday from 9:15 A.M. until 9:45 A.M.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to MaryAnn for her loving and compassionate care given to Dad during the past four years.
