Harvey J. Olsen

Harvey J. Olsen, age 87, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at his residence. Harvey was born in Racine, January 5, 1922, son of the late Charles and Hattie Olsen.

Harvey served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 94th Division with the 301st Infantry in Germany for which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His four brothers also served during the war and all survived. On July 1, 1955, he was united in marriage to Joyce A. Boyd who preceded him in death in September 1999. Harvey was employed by We Energies for forty-one years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Bethania Lutheran Church and enjoyed the monthly men’s breakfast outings. He also enjoyed working around the house and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, David and Gwen Olsen of Racine; three grandchildren, Cara Olsen of Omaha, NE, Adam Olsen of Green Bay, WI, Joel Olsen of Platteville, WI; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bradford and Marianne Boyd of Madison, WI; niece, Michelle Guillette (Doug Edwards); other relatives and dear friends. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Berthelsen; and his four brothers, Roy, Clarence “Denny,” William, and Vernon.

A Memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church, 4120 Wright Ave., with Reverend Steve Wohlfeil officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Tuesday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorials to Bethania Lutheran Church have been suggested.

Edward T. Checki

Franksville – Edward T. Checki, 74, passed away at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

Ed was a Millwright by trade, working 29 years for GM/Delphi, retiring in 2004. He loved spending time with family and friends, golfing, bowling, fishing, stock car racing and showing ponies, but flying planes was his real passion. Ed had a great sense of humor, a love and caring for people, dogs, equines, a brilliant mind, a myriad of talents which encompassed inventing, an incredible work ethic and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Ed is survived by his wife, Marilyn J. Checki; children, Mary White, Karen Checki, Debra (Scott) Gray, Daniel Checki, Michael (Karen L.) Checki, Steve (Lori) Checki and David Checki; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret McNeese; brothers, George (Millie) Checki, James (Helen) Checki and Ronald (Kris) Checki; and a sister-in-law, Patsy Rubel. Ed is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bernard C. Oertel

Bernard C. Oertel went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at the age of 95 while surrounded by his children.

Bernard was born in Racine on December 17, 1913, to William and Carrie (nee, Borowsky) Oertel. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. Bernard retired from Gorton Machine Company in 1972 after more than 32 years of service. He was a lifelong member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, actively involved as an usher, member of the choir and served on the building committee and as a former member of the Board of Trustees.

Bernard was also a member of the Gorton Twenty Year Club and the V.F.W. Bernard enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards, especially sheepshead and cribbage. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and wore out several Candyland games. He will always be remembered as a wonderful grandfather and a very proud dad of his children and their accomplishments.

Survivors include his children, Ted (Deborah) Oertel, Donna (Peter) Weinfurter and David (Jan) Oertel; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Oertel; grandchildren, Ryan (Jennifer) Oertel, Barry (Megan) Oertel, Amy (Fiancé Scott) Oertel, Nick (Erica) Oertel, Michael (Autumn) Oertel, Carley Oertel, James Oertel, Sara (Shawn) Rewald and Julie Weinfurter; seven great-grandchildren and one due in May. Bernard is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Paul H. Oertel; brothers and a sister-in-law, William C. and Peggy Oertel and LeRoy Oertel; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Homer Beebe; and sister, Ruth.

Funeral services for Bernard will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 728 Villa St., on Sunday, October 4, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. John Roekle officiating. Private family interment will take place in Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Evangelical Lutheran Church or the American Lung Association.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the former staffs of the Lincoln Center and Villa St. Anna, the current staff of Walnut Grove (Harbor House), the staff at the Zablocki V.A. Medical Center and Wheaton Franciscan Hospice especially nurse Mary Jensen for their many years of friendship and compassionate care they gave to our father, Bernard. John R. Siebrands

John R. Siebrands, 80, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare on Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

John was born in Herman, MN, on June 17, 1929, to John and Deana (nee, Harms) Siebrands. He served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, spending 18 months in Korea during the war. John married the former Lois M. Phillips; they would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in December. He was employed by Payne & Dolan for over 22 years. John and Lois also owned and operated O’ Johnny’s Taverns in both Lake Park and Douglas Avenue.

John is survived by his wife: Lois M. Siebrands; daughter, Sheila (Mike) Andresen; step-children, Roger (Diane) Phillips, Dickie (DorRayne) Phillips and Karen (Byron) Linton; grandchildren, Eddie (Staci) Andresen, Lisa Andresen and Connie Andresen; great-grandchildren, Cody, Reese, Michael, Renee, Cyrus, Dylan, Matthew, Andie, Sarah, Jackie and Kadi; and sister, Terri (Myron) Kanyuh. John is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Anna Mae and her husband and niece.

Funeral service for John will be held at the funeral home on Monday, October 5, 2009, at 7 p.m. with Rev. Carol Baumgartner officiating. Inurnment will take place in Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Ann (Popadick) Tucker

Mrs. Ann Tucker, 94, passed away on Tuesday evening, Sept. 29, 2009, at Ridgewood Healthcare Center. She was born in Racine on Feb. 23, 1915, to the late Andrew and Elizabeth (nee: Janosko) Popadick. She lived all of her life in Racine. She was united in marriage to Wilbur Tucker; he preceded her in death on June 17, 2004.

Ann and her husband, Wilbur, were co-owners of Delta Drive-In in Kenosha. She enjoyed baking for her family.

She is survived by her children, Donna (Ronald) Groom, LeeAnn (Jerry) Shelmidine, Richard L. (Josephine) Tucker; nine grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold (Dorothy) Popadic; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry Lynn Tucker; one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at the Wilson Funeral Home, 1212 Lathrop Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Molly Doreza officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

George E. Moskopf

Kenosha - George E. "Chaw" Moskopf, 97, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on September 29, 2009, at Brookside Care Center in Kenosha.

George was born August 2, 1912, in Kenosha, WI. He was the son of Lois and Mathilda (nee: Wellman) Moskopf. George was married (for 71 years) to Rose (nee: Springer) of Pleasant Prairie on Aug 13th, 1938, at Friedens Ev. Lutheran Church in Kenosha. She survives him. Also surviving is their son, Martin G. Moskopf, and his wife, Sandra (nee: Naegeli). George was especially proud of his three grandsons; Matthew Moskopf of Kenosha, Michael Moskopf of Milwaukee, and Jon and Jennifer (nee: Roundtree) Moskopf of Chicago, IL. George was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Mathilda; and brother, Rudy Moskopf.

George’s parents were farmers and he often spoke of many hot summer nights doing chores on the farm. His later working years were at the Kenosha Full Fashioned Mills. George retired from American Motors in Kenosha where he spent 33 years as the Manager in the Export Sales Department. He had many business friends throughout the world. George also spent some time at Isermann Brothers Clothing Store in downtown Kenosha and, during the '60s, served the City of Kenosha as an Alderman in the 17th Ward.

George believed that fitness was essential to a long and happy life. He enjoyed refereeing basketball, running road races and also cross-country cycling. His hobbies included fishing, golfing and bowling. He liked reminding his grandsons that he had a hole-in-one and also converted the 7-10 split. George also won the "City Pin Tournament" in 1940 with a 741 series - 90 pins better then his nearest competitor.

George and Rose liked to spend their summers in the North Woods of Wisconsin. They also spent 20 years of their retirement in Zephyrhills, FL. During that time, he and some friends founded Emmanuel Ev. Lutheran Church - a church that is still up and running today. George spent nearly his entire life as a member of Friedens Church, here in Kenosha. He also spent 75 years as a member of the WELS Ken-Wis Club, and was a member of MGV Harmonia. Business ventures also provided him with the opportunity to become a member of the "Turtle Club,” for people involved in foreign sales.

Funeral services will be held in Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5038 – 19th Ave., in Kenosha, on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 10 a.m.with Rev. David Rockhoff officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be in the Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and in the church on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. Memorials to the “Tuition Assistance Funds” of Friedens Lutheran School or Shoreland Lutheran High School have been suggested.

Betty Jane Kenth

Betty Jane (nee: Schmidt) Kenth, 76, passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center.

Betty was born in DePere, WI, on January 24, 1933, to the late Fred and Marie Christine (nee: Jorgenson) Schmidt. She has lived in Racine since 1950. On December 31, 1971, she was united in marriage with Arthur Harold Kenth.

During her career, Betty was employed with Surgitek and Ruud Lighting. She was quite an accomplished cook – especially her Italian dishes. Sharing these creations with her entire family gave her the most joy. She loved hosting parties for family, neighbors and friends and created many happy memories for all who knew her. As they continuously brought the smile to her face, she seized every opportunity of being in the midst of all her loved ones. Betty was constantly placing the needs of others before her own – a trademark she will always be remembered for.

Surviving are her loving husband, Art; daughter, Brenda Marie Kenth; daughter-in-law, Nancy Klick; grandson, Brian Alexander Forbes; great-grandson, Alex Forbes; sisters, Rose (Chuck Blankley) Dahlin, Dorothy (Charles) Taylor and Arlene Smithkey; brother-in-law, Gerald “Jerry” (Caryl) Kenth; sister-in-law, Edith Huevler; many special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention by name.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Thomas Forbes, on December 15, 1999; brother, Fred Schmidt Jr.; brothers-in-law, Harold Dahlin and Rudy Smithkey; nephew, Randy Smithkey; and Art’s parents, Harold and Marie Kenth, and Ed Gunderson.

Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 6 p.m. with Rev. Charlene B. Mills officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 4-6 p.m. In accordance with Betty’s wishes, cremation will follow the services. In memory of Betty, memorials may be made to the family.

Margaret Ann (Bononno) Tseffos

Margaret Ann Tseffos, 77, of Tempe, Arizona, and formerly of Racine went home to see her family on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, surrounded with love. Margaret Ann was a sweet, elegant and loving woman who carried on her family's tradition of sharing that love with others.

She was the proud daughter of Rose and Anthony Bononno. Her brother Paul, known as Sonny, was her best friend growing up. As a child she lived in a neighborhood with relatives from both sides of her family and was influenced by her mother, grandmothers and aunts. She loved to tell the stories of those days - walking to the Main Street theatre as a five-year-old with Sonny and balancing on the bridge, getting her two front teeth knocked out playing baseball and spending afternoons with her cousins at Wrigley Field. She described a wonderful childhood and how she thought she had the best of everything including the custom ice skates her father had made for her.

She loved being a Horlick High cheerleader, class of '50, and was proud that her daughter became one as well. She was the luckiest in love, having met and married the "little hot shot," Nick Tseffos, who absolutely adored her. The last birthday card he sent her read, "For your birthday and for birthdays yet to come. My love for you is endless." When they danced together, many got off the dance floor to watch them jitterbug. She lovingly cared for her husband when he became sick and comforted her children. When he passed in 1990, their love never ended. He hoped she would never date again and she didn't.

She gave unconditional love and so much of herself to her three children, Nick, Steve and Gina, who cared deeply for her. She followed her son Steve to Arizona and built a new life caring for her mother, Rose. She blossomed in Arizona and learned to love the desert. She was a caregiver to her mother and father until they passed and never complained. Margaret loved the music of her era and taught her children to love music as well.

She had a special love for her eight grandchildren, Ali, Nick, Cassi, Drew, Al, Shelby, Aria and little Elyse. She celebrated all of their milestones with pride and great excitement. So many of the family's cherished memories took place at her northwoods cabin, passed down from her parents. She called it, "my favorite place in the world." Margaret loved to travel and spent an extended time in Italy with her cousins. She was happiest when her extended family, especially her nieces and nephews, were with her. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and those who loved her.

She survived by her three children, eight grandchildren, her loving son-in-law and daughter-in-laws, Karen, Andy and Dina; her caring sister-in-law, Anita Bononno and her children, Rick, Cindy, Dan, and Lori; cousins, aunts and her special friends, Salvatore and Sandy Consiglio of Arizona.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., on Friday, October 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Father Cyprian Consiglio officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Michael J. Heller

Michael J. Heller, 53, passed away at Clement J. Zablocki V.A. Medical Center on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Michael was born in Racine on August 1, 1956, to Jay and Lois (nee: Cook) Heller. He attended school in Racine and graduated from Horlick High School in 1975. Michael served as a Sergeant in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, he achieved a Top Secret Clearance and became Chief of a Special Weapons Unit. Following his military service, Michael worked as a Journeyman Plasterer. He was a member of the Plasterers and Cement Mason Local 559. He held various positions for his union over the years, including Business Agent and Secretary. Michael also co-owned and operated Mastercraft Construction with his brother, Rick. He was an avid outdoorsman and he enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by two daughters, Amy (Mark) Reid and Monica Heller; two grandsons, Jordan Michael and Drake Alexander Reid; mother of his children, Rose Heller; very special and beloved friend, Sue Simmons; father, Jay (Janet) Heller; four brothers, Richard (Therese) Heller Kurt Heller, David (Lisa)Heller, and Jay (Kristal) Heller; sister, Jayne (Daniel) Exner; step-brother, Jim (Sheryl) Meyer; step-sister Linda (Kerry) Keenan; nieces and nephews, Steve (Agata) Exner and Jeff Exner, Krystyn, Rose, Jacob, Amber, Sean, Caitlyn and Jarrett Heller, Paula and David Johnson, Judith and Daniel Becker and Dina Clark; aunt, Helen Jakubowski and her family; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Injasoulian; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Garo (Kim) Injasoulian, Liz Johnson and Tamara Becker; and godchildren, Jacob Heller, Rebecca (Andersen) Peppler and Nicholas Wieczorek. Michael is also survived by many other close friends and relatives, especially the Andersen family. A visitation for Michael will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, October 1, 2009, from 4 p.m. until 7 pm. A prayer service will follow at 7 p.m. led by Rev. Jeff Thielen. Military honors will be presented at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Friday, October 2, 2009, at noon. Memorials to the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center ICU have been suggested.

Rita A. Honecker

Rita A. Honecker, age 94, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009, at the Golden Living Center, Kenosha, WI. She was born in Racine on June 16, 1915, daughter of the late William and Belle (Nee: Chapman) Honecker. Rita’s parents passed away while Rita was young and she was raised by her grandmother, Mary Chapman.

Rita was a graduate of St. Catherine’s High School. She was an executive secretary for many years at Haas Enterprise. Rita was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her cousins, John “Jack” T. Chapman of Racine; second cousins, Mary L. Chapman of Racine, Michael (Mary) Chapman of Wenham, MA, Tom (Virginia) Chapman, John S. (Terry) Chapman, Steve Chapman, all of Racine; niece, Carol Honecker of Waukesha; nephew, Bill Honecker of FL; other relatives and many dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, October 2, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2201 Northwestern Ave., with Rev. Jeff Thielen officiating. Willie Woods

Willie Woods, 90, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2009 at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center.

Willie was born on April 27, 1919, to the late Alex and Polly (nee: Blackmon) Woods in Allenville, Alabama. He worked several jobs until he was called to serve with the U.S. Army in 1942. After being discharged with honors, Willie moved to Racine and started playing semi-pro baseball with the Racine Blues and the American Cleaner teams. As a gifted ball player, Willie was afforded the opportunity to try out with the Chicago Cubs.

In 1959, he married the late Charleen “Sudie” (nee: Pearson) Woods. Prior to his retirement, Willie was employed by the JI Case Corporation. At the same time, he leased and co-owned the “J&W” Tavern. Willie was a Master Mason and a Worshipful Master Mason for “JOPPA #9” for more than 30 years. He was also a dedicated member of Greater St. Luke Baptist Church for over 20 years, where he served as a church trustee, member of the male chorus, church supplier, cook, finance committee, bus committee and Sunday school finance collector.

Willie leaves to cherish his many memories - six daughters, Beverly Reynolds, Sheila Grandy, Linda Dawson, Sharon Flowers, all of Racine; Sheila Brown of California; and Janice Lawrence of Atlanta, GA; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; special nephews and nieces, Charles (Mary) Woods, Willie (Nancy) Lawson, Hoby (Clementine) Lawson, David (Hattie) Coles, Sarah Robinson, Denise Tyler, Clarise Woods and Mable Baldwin; one special great-niece, Drenna (Megrit) Smith; and a host of great- nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews; great-great-great nieces and nephews; and best friends, James “Scoop” Bogan, John Mosley and Annie Howell. Willie is also survived by his very special lady friend “Ms. Rebecca Black,” who was there by his side until the end.

Homegoing services will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. in New Omega Baptist Church, 5731 Northwestern Ave., with Rev. Jessie Sumerall and Rev. Fred Richmond, Sr. officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be in New Omega Church on Monday evening, October 5, from 5-7 p.m. with a Masonic Service being offered at 6 p.m.; and visitation again in the church on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m.

Darvin J. Christian

Darvin J. Christian, age 80, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009, at the Hospice House, Pleasant Prairie, WI. Darvin was born in Theresa, WI, on August 15, 1929, son of the late Herman and Selma (Nee: Nickel) Christian.

Darvin was a graduate of Mayville High School. On March 18, 1950, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartford, WI, he was united in marriage to Leola V. Budahn. He was employed by Package Boiler Burner Service Company for over twenty-five years, retiring in 1991. Previously he had worked at the Milwaukee Road Company for seventeen years. Most recently, for the last sixteen years, he was working with the Milwaukee Metro Auto Auction, last working June 2, 2009.

He was a long-time dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church. Darvin was a member of the Wisconsin Sportsmen Association, Racine County Conservation League, Pheasants Forever, and the Theresa Rod and Gun Club. He loved hunting and gardening and throughout his life enjoyed photography. He will always be remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed.

Gerald E. Bethke

Gerald E. Bethke, 85, passed away at Franciscan Villa in South Milwaukee on Sunday, September 27, 2009.

Gerald was born in Racine on December 29, 1923, to Emil and Martha (nee, Weitkum) Bethke. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 until 1964, serving in the Pacific. Gerald married the former Dolores Keefe on June 17, 1950, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was employed by the City of Racine Waste Water for over 36 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the German Club, City of Racine 20 Year Club and a life member of V.F.W. Post 1391. Gerald loved to travel, including several times a year to Las Vegas. He also was an avid skier and Packer fan but, most of all, biking was his passion. Gerald biked across the United States on two occasions as well as biked throughout Europe.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Dolores Bethke; sons, Daniel Bethke of Montello, William (Charlene) Bethke of Muskego and Mark (Cherie) Bethke of Racine; and daughter, Laura Bethke of Redondo Beach, CA; grandchildren, Sara, Kelly and Christine; and his sister, Marcia (William) Huck of Racine. Gerald is also survived by other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Marvin Bethke.

Mass for Gerald will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1100 Erie St., on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Esteban Redolad. Joe was born in Cudahy on November 28, 1933. He retired from Pieper Electric in 1995.

Angeline F. (Fazzari) Burdick

Angeline F. Burdick, age 81, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at her residence. Angeline was born in Racine, WI, on March 9, 1928, daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline Fazzari. Angeline was a lifelong Racine resident relocating to Ellsworth WI with her daughter nine years ago.

Angeline was a graduate of William Horlick High School. On July 30, 1955, in Racine she was united in marriage to James Burdick who preceded her in death, February 8, 1978. Angeline and Jim owned and operated Racine Offset Printing for twenty-five years. She retired from Massey Ferguson. Angeline was a member of Vittoria Colona. Her pastimes included gardening, golfing and bocce. Above all she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be dearly missed.

James 'Horny' Richard Horner

James “Horny” Richard Horner, 61, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center on Wednesday, September 23, 2009.

Jim was born in Two Rivers, WI, on July 26, 1948, to the late Benjamin and Grace (nee: Weber) Horner. He faithfully served our country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Jim has lived in Racine for the past 31 years.

On August 24, 1991, he was united in marriage with Peggy Lee Sorensen. Jim owned and operated Horner’s Mudjacking Service for the past 30 years. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 494 and the Belle City Sportsmen’s Club. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time in Northern Wisconsin with family and friends. He was very talented with his hands, especially with the art of woodworking.

Robert L. O’Brien

Robert L. O’Brien, “Bob”, age 61, passed away Friday, September 25, 2009, at Froedtert Memorial Hospital. Bob was born in Chicago, IL, on February 19, 1948, son of the late George and Virginia (Nee: Cleary) O’Brien and had been a Racine resident since the age of seven.

Bob graduated from St. Catherine’s High School “Class of 1966” and went on to graduate from UW-Stevens Point. It was while attending college that he met his future wife, Sharon A, Richardson and they were married on September 4, 1971, in Milladore, WI. Returning to Racine, Bob was employed by Racine County and retired after 35 years working in various departments in Human Services. He also taught sociology at Gateway Technical College and most recently had worked at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Center.

Bob wrote a column for Lifestyles, a monthly publication, for many years. He was a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Church and was one of the founding members of The Sons of Erin. Bob was a history buff and loved to travel. Above all he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His optimism and laugh will be dearly missed.

Lester Leroy 'Butch' Redmond

Lester L. Redmond, 68, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints on Friday, September 25, 2009.

Lester Redmond was born in Mercer, Pennsylvania, to the late Everett and Esther (nee: Shields) Redmond on August 30, 1941. He lived in Racine for 50 years. He was united in marriage to Lois J. LaMere on November 8, 1963.

Mr. Redmond was a machinist at Interlake Co. He was a very patriotic man and enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He was a lover of animals, especially his dogs. His favorite time of the year was Christmas and New Years. He was an avid recipe collector and enjoyed grilling and playing cards. Most of all he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Butch will be dearly missed by his wife, Lois; two daughters, Christine and Brenda; three grandchildren, Justin, Stephanie and Kassadee; four brothers; one sister; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Scott; and three brothers.

William J. 'Bill' Linstroth

STURTEVANT -- William J. Linstroth, “Bill,” age 46, passed away September 24, 2009, at his residence. Bill was born in Racine on November 9, 1962, son of William and Julie (Nee: Dembroski) Linstroth.

Bill was a graduate of J.I. Case High School, “Class of 1982,” and furthered his education at Gateway Technical College. He had been employed by Martin Ford for the past 7 years. Bill served 18 years on the Racine Fire Bells and 12 years with the Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force. It was with the Racine Fire Bells that he became known for his photography skills. He also was a member of the Sturtevant Fire Department. Bill recently was recognized for his dedication and outstanding service for his support for fire service in Southeastern Wisconsin. In his name, September 13, 2009, was proclaimed William Linstroth Day. His smile and laughter and his famous chocolate cookies will be dearly missed.

Dennis M. Boscher

Dennis M. Boscher, 68, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of Racine, born on June 10, 1941, the son of Martin E. and Louise (nee: Bernath) Boscher.

Dennis graduated from William Horlick High School, class of ’59. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army and spent most of his time in Okinawa. He retired in 2002 after 39 years with WE Energies. Dennis grew up near Lake Michigan and liked spending time on the water, from fishing with his grandpa as a young boy, to his teen years when he formed the “River Rats” boating club, skiing, and his power boat. He also enjoyed playing cards, his motorcycle, sports car and was always ready for a road trip. He was a member of the 5th Street Yacht Club.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Chris (Tracy) Boscher; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jack Boscher; sister, Terri Tigges and special friend Nancy Litrenta. He is further survived by aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lance Brandon Boscher.

Eva J. (Daams) Poppelman

Eva J. Poppelman, age 90, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at Woodstock Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Kenosha, WI. Eva was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands,on October 1, 1918, daughter of the late Arnold and Margaret (Nee: Letschert) Daams.

Eva was employed by the County of Racine Purchasing Department for twenty years. She was a member of St. Lucy Catholic Church. Eva loved traveling to Hawaii, Holland and South Dakota. Above all she treasured her time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She rarely missed her grandchildren’s baseball, bowling, hockey or figure skating events. She will be dearly missed by all.

On October 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Richard R. Monfeli who preceded her in death, April 11, 1987. Phyllis retired in 1978 after many years of employment at Richard’s Men’s Wear. She was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and recently a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. She enjoyed needlepoint, knitting and was an avid reader. Above all she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be deeply missed.

Edmund Beyer Jr.

Edmund Beyer Jr., age 75, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009. at his residence. Edmund was born in Racine on January 10, 1934, son of the late Edmund and Leona (Nee:Frey) Beyer.

On August 7, 1998, in Traverse City, MI, he was united in marriage to Betty M. (Nee: Kaufman) Aldert. During the Korean War Edmund served in the United States Army as an airplane mechanic. He was employed by American Motors and retired from J.I. Case Company. Edmund was a member of J.I. Case Twenty Year Club, the V.F.W. and St. Sebastian Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed bowling with the Senior League at Castlewood. Above all he treasured time spent with his family and will be deeply missed.

LuElla Burgess (Nee: Allan)

LuElla Burgess, age 87, died on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009. She was born in Racine, WI, on October 16, 1921, and lived in Racine nearly all of her life. Loving mother of Deborah Burgess of Franklin, WI. Loving sister-in-law of Rita S. Allan of Pittsburgh, PA. Proud aunt of James S. Allan (M.D.) of Marblehead, MA. Luella is survived by other very close friends. Preceded in death by her mother and father, Eleanor K. Allan and James S. Allan, beloved husband John S. Burgess, and dear brother James S. Allan.

LuElla maintained a will to go on and a sense of grace that speaks to the nobility of the human spirit. She possessed generosity and kindness to those she met. LuElla cherished the rich yet simple pleasures in life: the love and companionship of family, close friends and caregivers.

While living in Racine, LuElla gave back to the community in her younger years serving as president of the Junior League of Racine, and the Racine Taylor Children’s Home.

LuElla is dearly loved and will be missed by her family and friends. Marguerite W. Haas, age 96, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at her residence. Marguerite was born in Lake City, MN, on October 2, 1912, daughter of Alfred and Josephine (Nee: Steichen) Wise.

Marguerite graduated from St. Teresa College in Winona, MN. She met her future husband, Norbert Haas shortly before graduation. After a year of teaching high school in Pipestone, MN, she married Norbert and moved to his home town of Racine.

While in school, Marguerite enjoyed a passion for the liberal arts. In particular, she was drawn to languages and music She studied English, Latin and French, and also played violin in her college orchestra.

Marguerite taught Latin and English at St. Catherine’s High School for 26 years. She retired at the age of 72. Teaching was fun for her. She shared her contagious enthusiasm for learning with her students and developed many lasting friendships.

Friends have characterized her as optimistic. As such, she may be a role model for aging well. After retiring, she volunteered to teach English as a second language in her home to recent immigrants. In later life, she studied conversational Spanish at UW-Parkside and enjoyed the social aspects of group learning.

Marguerite was a longtime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and more recently of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She also enjoyed active memberships in AAUW and the Catholic Women’s Club.

Marguerite enjoyed flower gardening, and her efforts were once featured on a local garden tour.

She had the good fortune to travel internationally at an early age and the experiences enriched her as a teacher. As most of her immediate family gradually migrated to the West, she made an annual winter visit to California, generally traveling on her own up to the present time.

Marguerite lived in her own home for over fifty years and at the Atrium for the last four years. Regardless of where she lived, Marguerite loved being surrounded by friends, whether young or old, who shared her spark and looked out for each others' needs.

As Marguerite approached her 97th year, she maintained her instinctive childlike awe over the rising of a full moon, whether it climbed over Lake Michigan or the California mountains. Love of natural beauty was part of her essence.

Marguerite was certainly a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed. Her family is grateful for her love and lessons.

Survivors include her children, Nancy (Ed) Staacke, Michael (Eileen) Haas, Bob (Jane) Haas and Jim (Claudia) Haas; her grandchildren, John May, Gus (Auturo Vazquez) May, Kevin (Charlen) May, Eric Haas, Adam Haas, Gabriel Haas, Alejandro Haas; her great-grandchildren, Abbey and Alexandra Vazquez May, Nicole and Jack May; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert Haas; and brothers, Robert (Isabelle) Wise and John (Adele) Wise.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1533 Erie St., on Monday, September 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Rev. John D. Aiello officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery, Hwy 31. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Memorials to St. Catherine’s High School, St. Vincent De Paul Society, or to one’s favorite charity have been suggested.

Marian L. (McGregor) Brack

Marian L. Brack, age 84, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at Ridgewood Care Center. Marian was born in Racine, December 29, 1924, daughter of the late Paul R. and Emma A. (Nee: Organ) McGregor.

On November 27, 1943, she was united in marriage to Ernest Brack who preceded her in death in 1973. She later became longtime companion and friend of Bob Rooney, who preceded her in death in 2000. Marian was well known and liked in the city through her twenty one years of employment as head cashier at Sentry Foods on Douglas Avenue and nine years at Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors on Durand Avenue. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and previously at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Marian enjoyed tending to her gardens. Above all, she enjoyed loving and taking care of her great-grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her sons, Gregg Brack and David Brack; her four grandchildren, Traci Brack, Jodi (Chris) Rothell, Ann Marie (Patrick) Coover, Ashley Brack; her great-grandchildren, Laina, Colin, Caleb, Austin and Ava; sister, Doris Pirk; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Gary P. Brack, August 7, 2009.

Funeral services will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 614 Main St., on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Memorials to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or to the family have been suggested.

Michael J. Saunders

Michael J. Saunders, 69, passed away at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.

Mike was born in Racine on January 8, 1940, to Celsus F. and Marguerite (nee: Troestler) Saunders. He served his country in the United States Air Force. Mike was a member of Moose Lodge #447. He enjoyed his daily morning routine of having breakfast with his friends at George Webb then at Park Inn. He liked to barbeque and watch Packers and Brewers games. The biggest joy in Mike’s life was spending time with his daughters, sons-in-law and his grandchildren.

Mike is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Jenny (Brian) Weyker of AZ and Mary (Joey) Talbott of Racine; grandchildren, Austin and Alex Weyker and Micah and Jonah Talbott; sister, Kathy Simanek; and former wife and friend, Judy Saunders. He is also survived by other relatives and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert Saunders.
A memorial service for Mike will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials to the American Cancer Society have been suggested.

Henry James 'Big John' Bester

Henry James Bester, 68, affectionately known to many as “Big John,” passed away at Select Specialty Hospital in West Allis on Monday, September 21, 2009.

Henry was born in Laurel, MS, on November 20, 1940, to James and Virgie Bester. On June 13, 1959, in Laurel, he was united in marriage with his lifelong love, Kizzie Washington.

Fishing, hunting, motorcycles, working on cars, socializing and spoiling children were some of John’s passions. He retired from the JI Case Company in 1995.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Kizzie; their children, Janet Bester, Cynthia (Rev. Joe) Buckley, James (Sherri) Bester, Johnnie Mae Bester, Henry Lee (Angela) Bester, Yvonne Williams, Virgie Bester, Kenneth Bester, Clifton Bester, Cedric Bester and Lakaeshia Bester; many adored grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Willie (Flora) Bester and Bennie Bester; sisters, Idella Redding and Geneva (Gurwell) McGee; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends (especially Robert and Mae Perry; Glasper and Ruth Overstreet) too numerous to mention all by name.

In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his son, Harvey L. Bester; mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

Homegoing services will be celebrated on Monday, September 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. in New Omega Baptist Church, 5731 Northwestern Ave., with Rev. Fred L. Richmond, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be in New Omega Church on Monday from 10-11 a.m.
