Lorraine Viola Schultz

Lorraine Viola Schultz, age 88, went to be with her Lord on September 16, 2009. She was born on Nov. 6, 1920, in Milwaukee, to William and Leila (Leister) Goelz.

Growing up during the Great Depression as the oldest of three daughters, Lorraine was a great help to her mother by taking care of her younger sisters. Her father enjoyed a stable job working for Jaeger’s Bakery, which allowed them to go to the movie theater every week. Lorraine was smitten, and remained a lifelong fan of films and plays. After her graduation from Washington High School and two additional years of specialized classes, she began a career as a secretary.

In 1951 she was joined in marriage with Rollin Schultz and moved to Racine. She had a strong love of God, and in a short time became a member of the congregation of Faith Lutheran Church. She had a son, Jeff, and created a safe and loving home. With her sharp mind and wry sense of humor, she approached domestic life in a no-nonsense way.

She also was thoughtful and charitable. As a longtime volunteer at Lincoln Lutheran Home, she eventually became known as “The Popcorn Lady.” In later years she suffered from severe arthritis, but fought it tooth and nail, remaining active and independent. At a time in life when many retire, she revived her old career to become secretary of her church for more than a decade. The wonderful friends and fellowship she found there sustained her throughout her life. She also took special delight spending time with her beloved grandson, Ehren.

She is survived by a son, Jeff (Liz Davis); her grandson, Ehren; her sisters, June (Tom) Kewley and Shirley (Heinz) Schoof-Brosig; many loving nieces, nephews and one guardian angel. Legendarily, she and her sisters never argued, and remain fast friends. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Rollin.

Funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 8500 Durand Ave., Sturtevant, on Monday, Sept 21, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Jeffrey Mortensen officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family at the church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at West Lawn Memorial Park at 2 p.m.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Schultz may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church.

The family would also like to thank Dr. Jesse DeGroat for his integrity and command of medicine; Bernie Flores and Cheryl Glasel and their wonderful staff at Lakeshore Manor, who have a habit of turning the worst days into the best.

Some clear night, if you get the chance, step out and look at the stars. Count Lorraine as one of them.
