Donald G. Coleman, 73, slipped quietly into forever on November 30, 2009, at the Veteran’s Boland Hall VA Center in Union Grove. The Coleman family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire VA staff, who made Don's last month bearable for him and them.
Donald, or Don to his friends, was born in Moline, IL, the 26th of October 1936 to the late Geneva and Glen Coleman. The oldest of their three children, Don resided in Racine, WI, for the majority of his life. He was united in marriage on March 7, 1959, to Barbara Ann Tesolowski, also of Racine. The couple has two grown daughters, Fawn and Kelly.
Donald, a Vietnam War era U.S. Army veteran, retired with 22 years of service. He enjoyed his days as a Drill Sergeant the most, on and off the parade field. (Just ask his wife and daughters.) He also served in Northern Japan where he operated special missions. After the service, Don joined SC Johnson Wax, where he retired with 31 years of service.
In his free time, Donald enjoyed traveling with his wife Barbara to Florida and Mexico. Although his favorite, three or four times a year, trip was definitely Las Vegas. (Viva Las Vegas, Baby!) The casino staffs began to think of him as family. His game was Blackjack and he was known by many as “King of the Blackjack.”
Don is dearly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Barbara, of Racine, WI; daughter Kelly Coleman-Kohorn and husband Phil Kohorn and grand daughter Jessica Coleman of Milwaukee, WI; and daughter Fawn Volz and husband Guy Volz and grand daughters Auburn and Emily Volz of Charlotte, NC. Emily follows her grandfather's duty to country by currently serving in the U.S. Air Force; Dennis Tesolowski, brother -in-law and his wife, Cheri, of Seneca, SC, and their children Anthony, U.S. Army, returned from his third tour in Iraq, and Alekzandr and his wife, Nicole, currently of Beaumont, TX; Don's late brother's wife, Barbara of Racine, WI, and their two children, Bob and Wendy. Don leaves a sole surviving sister, Patty Laveau, and her husband, Bob of Raliegh, NC.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Ronald. While Don is on record for being a 30-year survivor of ALS, (Lou Gehrig's Disease) his diagnosis of lung and brain cancer in the last two months sapped his fighting competitive spirit. Don was a man's man, who didn't believe in taking prisoners. Whether it was motorcycles, snowmobiles or cars, Don enjoyed making them beautiful and fast, just look at his two daughters, even when confined to a wheelchair his last several years, Don never slowed down, ever. God's speed, Don, We will always love you.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6400 Spring St., with Reverend William Dietzler officiating. Catherine 'Kay' J. (Batenburg) Peterson
Catherine “Kay” J. Peterson, age 91, passed away Monday, November 23, 2009, at Wheaton Franciscan – All Saints Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Kay was born in Clintonville, WI, on March 17, 1918, daughter of the late Peter J. and Johanna (Nee: Doubblerire) Batenburg and was a lifelong Racine resident.
Kay was united in marriage on September 20, 1941, to her beloved Byron L. Peterson who preceded her in death, May 30, 2004. Kay was a devoted wife and, if you asked her children, the most wonderful mother in the whole world. Survived by her oldest, Tom (Susie) Peterson of Euless, TX, Jim (Jane) Peterson of Tucson, AZ, Jane (Ron) Hitzelberger, Mary (Jim) Nielsen, all of Racine. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Jonathon on September 23, 1987; her brothers, Mike and John Batenburg; and sister, Mary Jane Brown.
Kay was happy to be able to witness and enjoy the wedding of her only granddaughter, Katelyn, to Glenn Smith on September 5 this year. Kay also dearly loved her grandsons and was so happy to see them at the wedding: Brian Peterson, Scott (Corrie) Peterson, Kevin (Shanna) Peterson, all live in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area of Texas; there are also five great-grandchildren in Texas.
All her life, Kay loved God above all else, and lived a life of kindness and service to everyone she met. Everyone who knew her would say she had a positive outlook on everything. She was a joy to be around and was thankful for all the blessings in her life.
Kay and Byron belonged to St. Edward’s Parish for many years, where she taught Theology classes; belonged to the Altar Sodality, and Byron sang in the choir. Raising her five children was a full-time job, but a joy, and after they were grown she ventured into the work force as an office manager for the Racine Motor Inn, for a short time.
For about the next fifteen years, Kay’s life was dedicated to her son, Jon, who lost his sight, and eventually suffered kidney failure. Kay had been a member and Eucharistic Minister of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for over 25 years, and was attending services as often as she could, with rides provided by her fellow parishioners.
Kay was blessed with good health, good friends, a family that adored her, and she was a wonderful example of how to live a life, that makes a difference.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church, 1401 Grove Ave., with Rev. Richard Molter officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hwy 32. Relatives and friends may meet Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass.

Joseph Steren
Joseph Steren, 59, of East Troy, passed quietly from the loving embrace of his family at Wheaton Franciscan Hospital in Racine on November 21, 2009, after defying the odds to survive pancreatic cancer with a magnificently optimistic spirit for nearly four years.
Joe was born in Milwaukee on August 8, 1950, to Sam and Doris (Knipsheer) Steren, who preceded him in death. He married the love of his life, Lynne, whom he continued to affectionately address as “Miss McMahon,” on June 1, 2002. Joe was tremendously proud of his daughter, Monica Steren, 19.
Joe retired from the Wisconsin State Department of Public Health on September 1, 2009, after 32 years as a Registered Sanitarian.
A true renaissance man, Joe's intellectual curiosity and relish for living led him down many avenues. He was an accomplished sportsman, a champion competitive shooter, adventurous gourmand and photographer. Joe loved rich conversation, spicy foods and flying down the road on his motorcycle with his wife or his daughter on the back.
Joe's love of history and deft research skills made him a respected amateur historian, particularly of WWII-era and military history. He collected WWII memorabilia, learning everything he could about the pieces he collected.
Joe's loving commitment to his friends and family was a delight and a constant in all aspects of his life. His gentle, genial nature was apparent to all who knew him, and he was a loyal and compassionate husband, father and friend. Joe mustered the resources to engage the disease with the same steadfastness of spirit, humor and strength of character that he brought to every pursuit. Surviving this cancer as long as he did, never giving up on living as fully as he knew how, is a testament to the good soldier he truly was.
Joe will be tremendously missed by his wife, Lynne; daughter, Monica Steren; and extended family Amanda (Steve) Peterson, Emily (Ryan) McBride, and grandchildren Mackenzie Peterson, Bryce Parrish, Lily Parrish, Taylor Peterson and Mason Peterson.
He is also survived by relatives Jeff (Mitzi) McMahon, Kass McMahon, Dolores McMahon, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Devoted felines Pywacket and Itty Bitty Kitty will never have a warmer lap to nestle in.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Saturday, November 28, at Spinnakers restaurant, 2 Christopher Columbus Causeway in Racine. Relatives and friends will gather at 11 a.m. with a memorial celebration beginning at noon.
